Editor's Review - Aria (CityCenter) Poker Room
Total Rating: 4.35
Room Quality Rating: 5
**Last Updated: 12/20/09**
Grand opening just before midnight on Wednesday, December 16th, 2009, Aria Resort and Casino is the centerpiece of the largest and most costly building venture in US History, known as CityCenter. Included in the multibillion dollar resort and casino is a fairly sizeable poker room that offers 24 tables in a comfortable and fairly spacious setting. Located directly adjacent to the main valet and a short escalator ride from the self parking garage, the poker room at Aria is situated in a near perfect location within the resort. Restrooms, snack bar, sports book, and self parking are all located within a few yards of the poker room, a true rarity by most Vegas standards. Though CityCenter, as a complex, is not the most conveniently located property (no direct entrance off the freeway), it’s massive size and impressive aesthetics make this a must see destination resort. The venue’s thousands of guest rooms and residential condos promise a continuous flow of locals and tourists to fill the card room daily and though the room has only been open for a few days as of this writing, this reviewer confidently believes that it has the potential of achieving true world class status in relatively short order.
Aesthetically, the Aria poker room is luxurious, modern, and understated (much like the entire casino). There are no dramatic color contrasts, though the felts are a unique shade of burgundy. The most unique aesthetic detail are the metal playing card sculptures that align all entrances and corners. These sculptures show a true investment in poker. An unnecessary and costly aesthetic adornment such as these sculptures demonstrate the want of the Aria poker room to become a true spectacle; to be both dramatic yet inviting. The color palette of the room is a mixture of dark browns, taupes, and deep reds. The chairs, with their multicolored backs, are reminiscent of the old Bellagio chairs, but with strong improvement in comfort and design. The room is surrounded by high definition flat screen televisions that are within eyesight of every single chair in the room, a true rarity for larger rooms. The interior aesthetics coupled with the metallic card sculptures framing the venue further demonstrates that the Aria poker room is truly a work of opulent art that is both beautifully designed and functional.
The chair comfort is quite high, and ranks amongst the best that the Strip has to offer. Second only to the Wynn, the chairs at Aria are comfortable, well designed, and practical. Adjustable height (but unfortunately lacking adjustable backs), the chairs are on wheels and swivel to allow for maximum comfort during long sessions. The chairs are dark brown plush, with multicolored backs, which adds to the overall color coordination of the room.
Despite encompassing 24 tables, the room is not that large. Though most comparable to the Bellagio as far as general layout, the room is not nearly as cramped as the sister property. Of course, there are certain seats at certain specific tables that can be cumbersome to get in and out of (table 24 for example) but this is a minor complaint. When it comes to table spacing, the room falls well behind that of Venetian, but is light years ahead of Bellagio. When compared to the Wynn, a similarly luxurious property, the room is not as intimate due to the lack of aesthetic walls, but allows for significantly more room to maneuver between tables and find your seat.
Equipped with all modern technology, the room utilizes the Genesis Gaming Bravo system for tracking the waitlists, open seats, chip requests, and players earned comps. All players swipe at the table by presenting their MGM Mirage players’s card to the dealer upon arrival. All time is accounted for, and all open seats are automatically tracked at the brush podium. This leads to efficiency and room management that seems fluid and organized. The audio system in the room is loud and clear without being overbearing or distracting, and the music is soft and adds to the general ambiance.
Regarding room organization, the venue is divided into three distinct areas. The main poker room floor encompasses 18 tables, which line the rail nicely and allows for solid walk-by traffic for game observance. The elevated top section includes 5 tables and is reserved for high limit poker, starting at 5/10NLHE. There is also a ultra high stakes room with a single table for the highest of stakes (most recently, a 200/400NLHE game was running in the room with notable high stakes players such as Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, and Guy Laliberte). Though designed to accommodate “The Big Game”, the discussion throughout the industry is that there is no plan to move the Big Game from Bellagio, but to provide an alternate venue for ultra high stakes players. The ultra high stakes room includes direct, private access to the cashier cage, a first in Las Vegas, so ultra high limit players needn’t carry their checks very far to cash out or to deposit their stake in their private deposit boxes.
Despite the long list of accolades that this room is getting by this reviewer, there are still some minor complaints to point out. The noise level of the room (both inside and outside) is fairly high. Also, the room seems to lack any sort of cupholders. Though side tables are available for players, there are not enough to service every person, so most drinks are kept on the felt, which can lead to continued problems with spillage. It was also notable that few to any ashtrays were found outside of the poker room. As with nearly all poker rooms in Vegas, Aria is a non-smoking card room, but ash trays are almost always located outside of the poker room so players can avoid ashing in trash cans or even worse, on the floor. Finally, the room is a bit more cramped than it should be. In addition, there are a few tables that are located a bit close to the exterior framing walls. This causes certain players to be "locked in" to certain seats and even resulted in at least one player climbing over the metal card sculptures to get out of the room. This is really only a problem on table 24, in the front corner, but should be addressed. All of these complaints are minor, and can all be easily corrected.
Throughout the construction, several comparisons were made between Aria and Bellagio. Was CityCenter going to replace Bellagio for high stakes poker action? Are all the big players going to move down the street? Will Bellagio close their poker room? For the most part, the answer to all of these questions is no, in this reviewer’s opinion. Aria’s poker room is very nice and in this reviewer’s opinion, superior to that of Bellagio (due to layout, chair comfort, etc), but Bellagio will more than likely retain its high stakes poker status. Though the Big Game is expected shuffle between the properties for a while, it is expected that most other high limit action (30/60O8, 40/80Mix, 100/200LHE, 10/20NLHE) will stay next door.
Is Aria’s room quality superior to Venetian? This remains to be seen. There are many subtle differences between the two, with each room excelling in different areas. In this reviewer’s opinion, the Venetian is aesthetically a nicer poker venue. However, there are many little things that Aria has over its most formidable competitor. Aria has a better location within the casino, and is more centrally located in relation to self parking and valet. The restrooms are closer than that of Venetian, and though strictly a matter of pure opinion, the chairs are more comfortable at Aria due to the backs not being reclined as much. Venetian offers significantly more space between the tables, is 15 tables larger, and offers a customer sitting lounge, which Aria did not include. The rooms are very different in design and overall execution, and time will only tell who will eventually come out ahead. At the time of this review’s writing, though Aria gives the Venetian a reasonable run for its money, Venetian will retain its #1 spot on the AVP Editor Review rankings.
Overall, the Aria poker room quality is very high, and is a room that all poker players should check out to see for themselves. The room is well apportioned, comfortable, and the general ambiance is as welcoming as it is action driven. The room was well thought out in its design, location, and layout, and the aesthetic details are plush and impressive. There is no question that the Aria poker room is designed to compete on a world class level, and given time, this reviewer expects Aria to be one of the few rooms in town that can be depended on for action around the clock, every day of the week.
The poker room at Aria is one of the best in the city. A true destination room that will only get better with time, Aria is easily one of the top 3 rooms in the city.
Competition Rating: 3
Judging competition for a brand new resort & casino’s poker room is not really as hard as one may think. Taking into account how the room is constructed, who the casino caters to, and what tournaments are offered, one can ascertain rather quickly whether or not the room will be a tourist based or regulars based room. Aria’s poker room is designed to be a serious poker venue, no question. However, the hype and destination aspects of the CityCenter complex in general means that everyone will want to come by and see what 10 Billion dollars looks like. The complex includes thousands of hotel rooms, which al feed into the single 24 table poker room that Aria offers. There is even a shuttle/monorail that connects neighboring properties (including the lower brow Monte Carlo). All of these things put together means that Aria’s games will feature a significant amount of tourists and recreational players mixed in with the inevitable serious daily regulars that will discover Aria and decide to make it their home base.
The Aria poker room does not drop a jackpot dollar. Aria is one of only 5 rooms (out of the 59 rooms that Las Vegas offers) that does not drop a jackpot. The others are Bellagio, Venetian, Wynn, and MGM Grand. With the exception of MGM Grand (a room that really should drop a jackpot), the other rooms are designed to compete on a world class level, and cater to serious players. Aria is no exception. The Aria poker room takes itself seriously, and with the technology and dealer quality that this reviewer has experienced, there is no question that the more serious players will find their home there.
In the few sessions that this reviewer has played in the room (graveyard and dayshift), the games have presented a strong mix of local grinders and tourists. Many of the tourists were visiting Aria from neighboring properties (including Monte Carlo and Bellagio), but an even larger number were visiting from further South Strip (including Excalibur, MGM Grand, and Luxor). This further demonstrates how Aria is not only a true destination poker room, but that CityCenter as a whole is nothing short of a massive attraction. The high numbers of visitors will do nothing but help the games become amongst the softest of the big rooms, especially in the first few months.
As stated earlier, all new rooms are expected to be checked out by everyone initially. This is exponentially multiplied when it comes to a brand new resort, let alone one as spectacular as CityCenter. The poker room at Aria delivers, and the daily Vegas grinders and recreational players will see this and return on a regular basis. Couple these players with the thousands of visitors and hotel guests, and Aria is well positioned to offer a solid mix of players to all poker tables.
Overall, the Aria poker room’s competition level is as expected. It is not a room that will be dominated only by regulars (for that, see Stations), nor is it a room that will be filled mainly with casual tourists (for that, see Bally’s). Aria caters to everyone with a lean toward experienced players (mainly due to the lack of a jackpot drop). Over time this reviewer expects Aria to provide players a broad mix of action oriented games on a daily basis.
Dealer Rating: 4
The dealers at the Aria (City Center) poker room are all experienced, well trained, and welcoming to players. All dealers at Aria either transferred in from other MGM Mirage properties or applied and auditioned. Experience was required, so there are no break-in (brand new) dealers in the card room. What sets Aria’s dealers apart, at least at the outset of their grand opening, is their overwhelming welcoming nature. All dealers greeted all players at the beginning of every down, and thanked all players before leaving. Every single player was thanked after every toke, and extraneous talking was kept to a minimum, which allowed for the game to run at a consistent speed.
Mechanically, nearly all dealers were top notch. This reviewer played in a mixed game during one session and NLHE in another. The true test of any dealer is mixed game mechanics, and surprisingly, all dealers handled the mixed game well. Their up-pitch in stud was correct and impressive. Their handling of draws was sound in draw games, and side pots were handled correctly. There were some minor issues with remembering to burn in stud and proper procedures in certain draw games, but this is expected due to the rarity of the games.
Floor decisions were only needed during the mixed game, and can be expected due to the non commonality of the games included in the mix. Frustrating dealer errors such as rolled decks, placing the 1 & 10 seats instead of pitching, squaring the muck, dropping the stub on the muck, and other such dealer errors were not witnessed even once by this reviewer, which is nothing short of exceptional. In dealing NLHE, I did not see any dealers match stacks during all ins, which was good to see, but improper board placement was seen a few times (a couple dealers did not straighten their boards after flopping it improperly). This is a minor complaint, and is something that is very easily corrected.
Overall, the dealers at Aria are amongst the best in the city. Though this reviewer had previously rated the Wynn dealers as being the best overall, a few recent visits to the Wynn have been quite disappointing with regards to dealer attitudes. Though it is understood that a new property often includes nervous smiling faces and customer service driven personnel (which often fades with time), this reviewer is fairly confident that the Aria dealers will continue to exude the customer friendly attitudes, demeanor, and mechanical competence well after the grand opening glow has faded.
Cocktail Rating: 5
The cocktail service at Aria is second only to Venetian; a truly spectacular accomplishment. All waitresses were attentive and served all customers with a genuine smile. What impressed this reviewer more than anything was the amazing memory that some of the servers demonstrated. After placing an order for Perrier, then not ordering one again for nearly 1.5 hours (despite many chances to do so), the waitress asked if I would like another Perrier. This is quite astounding considering that there were over 200 players in the room at the time, many of which ordered many different types of drinks. This attention to detail will be remembered by the players and is one of the many reasons why the cocktail service offered at Aria is amongst the top in the industry.
The servers are all attractive and the uniform is comparable to that of the Wynn, which means that they exude class, yet are quite revealing. Unlike Bellagio, which include white tennis shoes in their cocktail server uniform, Aria’s servers are all professionally dressed and well put together. The layout of the room allows for nearly every seat to have easy access to their drinks upon delivery (with the exception being table 24), and the servers work hard to ensure that every patron is served quickly.
Though the speed of service seems to beat that of Venetian, cocktail selection and water availability keep Venetian in the #1 spot. Venetian is still the only property to serve Fiji water complimentary to patrons as well as a host of other minor benefits like Root Beer in the can as well as Coca-Cola in the bottle. This pits Venetian at a near insurmountable level of cocktail service, but Aria is obviously striving to give Venetian a reasonable run for its money.
Aria is a Coca-Cola property and is one of the few properties that serve Red Bull in the can upon request. Due to the high cost, Red Bull served in the can and most premium cocktails are becoming increasingly rare in poker rooms. Caesars Palace stopped serving all top shelf and Red Bull to all poker players quite a while ago, and MGM Grand refuses to serve shots of any liquor to its poker patrons. Neither of these restrictions are in place at Aria, allowing the property to easily earn a top two designation on AVP for cocktail service. Red Bull, top shelf, and even frozen drinks are all available to poker patrons.
Management Rating: 4
The management of the Aria poker room is impressive on nearly all levels, but does have some room for improvement. For this section of the review, the management will be judged on three different levels; corporate investment in poker, room management as a whole, and finally the personalities and competence of the floor management.
On a corporate level, the room is managed very well. MGM Mirage invested in its poker room and equipped all tables with the electronic Bravo system. The list is managed electronically, and all open seats are tracked through the computer system. The room layout is functional, but the tables could have been placed slightly further apart to allow for better ease of maneuvering. The design of the top section and the ultra high limit room is functional and does not take away from the room as a whole. Every table is replete with an automatic shuffler, Bravo tracking computer, and comfortably fits 10 players. The room is located perfectly within the resort, with easy access to the restrooms, sports book, and self/valet parking. The rake on the low limit games is identical to that of Bellagio and other MGM Mirage properties, at 10%/$4 max with no jackpot drop. This puts it well ahead of Caesars Palace and other Harrah’s card rooms, and aligns it with the other big rooms on AVP. We would have liked to see poker comps be redeemable at all food venues as well as the gift shop, but such is not the case. Comps can only be redeemed at 4 food venues onsite and require a paper comp to be printed in the poker room. Ideally, comps could be redeemed with a swipe at all outlets, but MGM Mirage does not employ such a system. To date, only Harrah’s Entertainment and Stations casinos employ such a versatile system. Overall, on a corporate level, the room is managed well, and still deserves a top spot in the ranking.
The room management as a whole is as good as expected from a top tier room, though there are some areas for improvement. During the first few nights that the room operated, the games appeared to be built from the left to the right, filling in all the back tables as they went. This left the front right side of the room nearly empty including at least 4 tables that lined the rail. This reviewer would prefer to see the rail tables filled first so to encourage walk-by traffic to observe the games being spread. It should be noted that they are working to lump games together by limit, which shows a solid knowledge of proper poker room management and attention to detail.
The personalities and competence of the floor management impressed this reviewer. Though one floor decision made during the mixed game was slightly questionable (and open for interpretation), the floorman that handled the decision did so with a professional and knowledgeable tone and demeanor. Throughout the shifts, all floorpersons were observed and their interactions with patrons were noted, and all instances demonstrated a keen knowledge of poker and a customer focused attitude. It seems that professionalism, customer service, and competence is exuded from all floor personnel.
Overall, the Aria poker room management is well above average, and ranks amongst the best in the city on many levels. Though we would like to see the comps program expanded a bit and see the game placement in the room a bit more rail-centric, these complaints are minor.
Comps Rating: 4
The Aria poker room utilizes the Genesis Gaming Bravo system which tracks all players via the MGM Mirage players’ card. Players present their card to the dealer upon arriving at the table and the system automatically tracks all hours played and adds the comp dollars automatically. Players earn $1 per hour in all low limit games and upwards of $1.50-$2 per hour in the high limit games, which is standard in the industry. In addition to the earned hourly comps for cash games, tournament players can expect to earn a flat $15 food comp for tournament play.
The earned comps require that a paper comp be generated in the poker room then presented at the food venue for redemption. Ideally, the earned poker room comps could be redeemed at all food venues and at the gift shop by simply swiping the players’ card, but that is unfortunately a rather uncommon perk offered at only a select handful of poker rooms in Las Vegas (Harrah’s Entertainment and Stations casinos are the only companies to offer joint property versatile comps to poker players in Las Vegas). Aria’s poker room comps can be used at 4 restaurants at the property as well as for tableside foodservice. The restaurants include the coffee shop, the buffet, the sports grill, and the quick service coffee/snack bar. We expect that the Chinese/Noodle bar to eventually be included as a venue for comp redemption, but at this time such is not the case.
Aria does not offer high hand jackpots or bad beat jackpots, nor is the room running any sort of special promotions at this time. Due to the high end nature of the entire resort, we do not expect jackpots or special promotions to be added any time soon. As the property is already a well hyped spectacle, it does not really need extraneous promotions to get people in the door. Over time, we expect some sort of promotions to be done to encourage more regular players to check out the room, but with the room being so new at the time of this writing, nothing is planned thus far that we are aware of.
Overall, the comp system at Aria is in par with the other top tier rooms in Las Vegas, and meets expectations on nearly all levels. The installation of the Genesis Bravo comp management system demonstrates an understanding of modern poker room comp expectations and allows the room to compete at the highest of levels of customer service due to the ability to properly track and reward customer loyalty.
When taking all sections into consideration, the Aria poker room handily earns a top three ranking on AVP, and has the potential to replace Bellagio in the #2 spot with time. If customer service and dealer quality continues to be as strong as it was during the Aria’s opening week, it will only be a matter of time before Bellagio is relegated to third place status in the Las Vegas poker landscape.
