Editor's Review - Excalibur Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.35

Room Quality Rating: 3
**Updated 11/15/09**

The Excalibur poker room is one of the few continuously operating card rooms in the city, having grand opened in 1990, and running in various places throughout the casino ever since. Peaking at 21 tables, the room now sits comfortably at 12 live, dealer dealt tables, of which 6 have automatic shufflers. The room tried an experiment in the summer of 2008 that involved replacing all the live tables with electronic dealerless tables. The experiment failed, and the traditional tables with live dealers were brought back less than a year later. Known for a truly entry level poker experience, the Excalibur poker room is a comfortable, low frills room that caters to hotel guests and locals that appreciate the liberal promotions, casual staff, and overall family friendly and novice welcoming venue.

The poker room itself is aesthetically plain and unassuming. The tables were all re-felted with tight new cloth, and the armrest leather was reupholstered for the room’s grand reopening. The chairs are well padded leather, but do not offer adjustable backs, wheels, or adjustable height. The tables all have wooden racetracks, some of which have a gap between the felt and the rail that creates a collection of dirt, cocktail straws, and other trash that manages to accumulate in the opening, but this is a minor complaint. Situated in the southwest part of the property, the room is walled off on all 4 sides with half walls and glass partitions that seal in the room nicely, with 3 entrances. The room is obviously not a sealed room necessarily, as there are no permanent walls, but the atmosphere still tends to be a little intimate due to the higher than average glass that sits on top of all 4 half walls. There is a cashier cage located in the center of the room that is approachable and easily navigable. The location of the poker room within the resort is quite conveniently placed, allowing short walk access to the Race and Sports book, self parking, the Café, and even billiard tables. Also, a Starbucks is located only a few feet away (though the Starbucks seems to close quite early in the evening).

Though the room is 12 tables, it is rare to see more than 6 cash games running at any given time. The tables are spaced out nicely, allowing all players to maneuver comfortably between the tables. Though the most focal tables tend to be the least used, the concentration of all cash games to one side of the room does make sense and allows for a much busier overall feel to the room when 5 or more cash games are running.

Television placement in the room is not ideal, but adequate, allowing players to view various sporting events from 4 focal televisions positioned outside and above the thoroughfares that line both sides of the room. There are two large screens located above the cashier cage (left over from the electronic table experiment) that the room uses for its tournament clock. We would like to see the room utilize these screens for electronic list management at some point in the future, as the current paper and pen list tracking is antiquated, to say the least.

The technology of the room is below average. The list is tracked on paper and pen, and the room does not use the Genesis Bravo system for tableside comp tracking. They have recently started computer tracking comps by asking customers to present their cards upon arrival and presenting them again upon departure, but it is obviously a home engineered system, as the actual comp issued is the same $4 comp that the room has given out for years, just given out in tracked 4 hour increments on the computer. The room does employ the use of 6 automatic shufflers in its most commonly used tables, which elevates the technology quotient slightly, however. The tournament clock is all electronic, which is a welcome recent addition to the venue.

The frills of the room are rather light. The most prominent feature that stands out in the room is the jackpot wheel which is large and sits against the back wall. The room also offers a water cooler, but does not offer any side tables (which is peculiar, since the room used to offer side tables when it was 20 tables and located where the current sports book sits).

Overall, the Excalibur poker room is fitting considering the property. Being a 20 year old venue that has historically catered to families and value minded tourists, the Excalibur poker room is very welcoming to new players and offers daily lessons for those learning the game. The room is unassuming and not at all intimidating, as it is out in the open and viewable from all sides. Though the room is put together casually, it is well designed and spaced out to allow for adequate comfort and maneuverability throughout the room to all patrons. The lack of technology; though a little disappointing, is fairly well managed by the staff and does not necessarily take away a lot from the overall experience.

Competition Rating: 5
The strongest selling point of the Excalibur poker room is the competition, by a large margin. The three most common games spread are 1/2NLHE and 2/4LHE, as well as an occasional 2-6 Spread Limit game. The NLHE games are easily amongst the most consistently beatable games in town. The players that frequent the Excalibur are usually families and value minded tourists and low brow locals. None of these player types pose any real threat to even the most slightly educated card player. Well known for its kitchen table environment, novice players are welcomed with open arms and the games cater to these new players. Casual enforcement of technical poker room procedures and rules allows for players to not feel even slightly intimidated when approaching the table for the first time, thus making the games that much more profitable to an experienced player.

This reviewer has played several hundred hours of poker at the Excalibur over the years, and the competition has yet to disappoint. Games are often talkative, loose, and casual. Cocktail calls are common, as many players sitting the in the games are there for the sole purpose of getting as many “free” drinks as they can. It is common to see drunken nonsensical plays being made followed by instant rebuys. Overall, the competition level of the Excalibur poker room is nearly non-existent. It is a wonderful place to play if you are looking for a game full of inexperienced players, and if you have the patience to play straightforward ABC poker, there is no reason why you should not walk away from the room a winner, other than bad beats that might ensue from trying to gets reads on players that don’t know what they have.

The Excalibur poker room is perhaps the best room in Vegas for novice players to get their feet wet thus offering some of the best low limit games in the city.

Dealer Rating: 2
Most of the Excalibur poker room dealers were hired within the rooms first few years of existence, from 1990 through 1995. This means that though extremely experienced and friendly, they are significantly older and quite set in their ways. As a dealer critic, it used to be bothersome to see so many flagrant protocol violations taking place in the room, but now I am very accustomed to it, as the unique pleasure of being dealt to by 20 year veterans of the poker industry is comforting, even if the modern protocols are not followed. Though this does not necessarily excuse the behavior (as evidenced by the 2/5 rating), it does explain why this unique collection of old school dealers came together.

It must be noted that the Excalibur is perhaps most well known for catering to first time novice players and casual tourists (AKA the “kitchen table” crowd). Many of the dealers at the Excalibur personify typical “kitchen table” dealing techniques, which needs to be allowed for when attempting to critique the room objectively. On a subjective level, the dealing staff fits the room like a glove, largely due to the kitchen table rules and loose rules enforcement.

Had this reviewer taken only proper dealing procedures into account, the room would more than likely receive a significantly lower rating, but due to the personalities of the dealing staff, the number is higher than one might expect after playing there. Many of the dealers are reminiscent of our parents and grandparents. They are comforting, welcoming, and control the games well. They are patient with new players, and take their time with their actions so the novice players can catch up. Many of them have seen it all at the table, so there is little that will surprise them. The personalities are certainly strongest aspect of the Excalibur poker room dealing staff.

Though their personalities award bonus points, it is hard to overcome the many protocols and procedures that seem to be overlooked by the management when it comes to properly training their staff. It is common to see egregious violations such as rolling the deck, matching stacks when facing an all in, lazy pitches, improper board spreading techniques, and improper muck control. Some dealers talk about hands while in play, which is a strong detriment, but such dealers are in the extreme minority. Game control is a strong point of most of the dealers though and action, despite the novice level of many of the players, is kept at a reasonable pace.

Overall, the dealing staff is a mixed bag. There are some dealers that stand out as being well schooled in the proper procedures (Tim and Brian being amongst the most proficient when it comes to this), and others that do their jobs well but overly enforce certain rules more than others (i.e. there is at least one dealer who won’t deal you in if your cel phone is even lit up, let alone in your hands). The dealers suffer from selective enforcement of rules to an extreme degree, but generally this is a trivial issue. When assessing the overall dealing rating of this room, this reviewer likes the dealers and finds humor in the unique idiosyncrasies that many of the employees display when dealing. Their personalities fit the room well, and their welcoming attitudes leave many novice players at ease, which is an ideal situation for this room. This is not the Wynn or Venetian. This is the Excalibur, and the dealing staff is better than one would expect from such a venue, even if exacting modern protocols and procedures are generally lacking from some of the staff members.

Cocktail Rating: 3
The cocktail service at Excalibur varies by shift more so than any other venue that this reviewer has ever experienced. There are times when the waitresses rightfully deserve a 5/5 as they can be exceptionally fast, serving drinks with near lightening speed. There are other times; however, that the service time between drinks can exceed the 45 minute mark. It is not clear why exactly the shifts vary as much as they do, but the reasoning is more than likely to do with the location of the service bar and the number of waitresses on hand to take orders and deliver the drinks.

It is expected that the drink selection at a property like Excalibur will be quite limited, and such is the case. No premium alcohols are available, nor are any frozen drinks or Red Bull (in lieu of Red Bull, Sobe Energy is served in a glass). To reiterate, the drink selection is what you expect from Excalibur. One cannot walk into Excal and expect to get Black Label. A value driven property serves alcohol that fits its value minded guests, which make up the majority of their clientele.

When this room switched to electronic tables, the cocktail service was adversely affected. The lack of $1 chips in the room worked strongly against the staff, as patrons did not have chips to tip with. This created expected adversity between the cocktail servers and poker players, since the ladies work for tips, and if the tips are not coming, their wages are extremely affected. Though the room has transitioned back to a traditional dealer dealt card room, the relationship between poker and the cocktail staff has improved immensely, but there is still some angst that can occasionally be seen emulating from certain waitresses due to the negative stigma that was created from the experiment.

The servers vary in age and friendliness from extremely friendly older women to young attractive females that rarely smile. Depending on who is there and when, the service easily earns a 5/5 or a 1/5, hence the overall 3/5 that this review has given the room.

Management Rating: 3
The Excalibur poker room management has been improving since the conversion back to traditional tables, but still has a long way to go before the room can be considered well managed. The promotions roster that the senior management came up with are light. Many promotions that used to be run are no longer. Aces cracked is not longer in place as of November 2009, and wheel spins are only awarded for Quads or better (used to be for Aces full or better). The room is managed well as far as table balancing and game assignments for new players, and despite having a paper and pen for list management, the room handles itself well.

The management does have its fair share of challenges, though. The constant dealer issues with regards to protocol falls directly on management, as they are responsible for training their staff and keeping them up to date on the proper, modern, and correct procedures. The cel phone rule is extremely antiquated and needs updating as even the TDA (Tournament Director’s Association) acknowledges that cel phone use is permissible, with the only limitation being talking on the phone when in a hand (texting or otherwise while at the table is permissible at both the WSOP and the vast majority of poker rooms in Las Vegas).

The floor staff is divided between floor supervisors and hosts (the latter of which are essentially brushes that maintain the lists and run chips for the customers). The supervisors seem to vary significantly by shift, with some supervisors possessing significant poker room experience and others being extremely green and obviously lack the long term experience that is needed to properly enforce rules, make correct floor decisions, and oversee a busy card room. As a frequent player in the room, this reviewer has witnessed a few decisions that were highly suspect, and others that were spot on correct. With time, it is expected that this situation will improve as the staff gets more and more acclimated to the live card room environment (a few of the supervisors were hired during the electronic experiment) .The hosts/hostesses are all strong, including John and James, both of which possess a few years of Las Vegas card room experience.

Certain management decisions are certainly suspect and perhaps need to be re-evaluated (inappropriate considering the venue promotions like Strip Poker need to go), while other decisions deserve to be applauded (offering double wheel spins on graveyard and continuing to offer the classic Bad Beat Jackpot with a static qualifier). Their tournaments are perfectly designed with their core customer in mind (i.e. short stacked quick tourneys of convenience), and it seems that the room organization is managed well enough.

Overall, the poker room management at Excalibur has improved since the room re-opened as a live card room. Though we would like to see things such as Genesis Bravo tableside comp tracking and electronic list tracking, it may be unrealistic considering the sluggish economy in Las Vegas at the moment. The floor staff is an area for improvement, and though at least one could use an attitude adjustment, most others are friendly, welcoming and professional.

Comps Rating: 4
The Excalibur has improved is former comp system by instituting a standard $1 per hour of play. The room has accomplished this by tracking the hours at the cashier desk. The food voucher is the same one that has always been given out, as the room lacks the modern comp tracking technology that is seen at other properties such as MGM Grand, Treasure Island, and Harrah’s properties. The ideal comp tracking system (Genesis Bravo) is not in use in this room which hinders the overall comp tracking quality, as their current system requires players to log in and out with the supervisor, causing slow delays with players getting in and out quickly.

Aside from the $1 per hour comps, the room has instituted a wide array of promotions including double jackpot wheel spins during certain hours, reduced rake during the day, a flat $222 for pocket 2’s (holding a pocket pair), and a Bad Beat jackpot with a liberal qualifier (Aces full of 10s beaten). The wheel could use a value update, as the relative value of a spin is quite low considering how many $20, $25, and $30 values are on the wheel. It can only be assumed that the jackpot reserve for the Excal is more than likely growing at a fast pace, despite the fact that only 1 card needs to play for the wheel spin to be awarded. Recently, the qualifier for a wheel spin was increased to Quads or better, when it used to be awarded for all Aces full hands. This is more than likely due to the frequency of payouts, but perhaps might be re-evaluated once the reserve is adequately rebuilt.

Overall, the comps and promotions at the Excalibur are impressive considering the property, and fit the room well. The wheel spin for jackpots are adored by recreational players and tourists, as it adds some fun and excitement to the game, which is exactly what the vast majority of their core players seek.. Offering 24/7 Aces cracked also fits the bill nicely for the room, and is a promotion that Excalibur pioneered long before there were 50+ poker rooms in Vegas. The newly instituted $1 per hour comps, despite being tracked and dispersed in a rather antiquated fashion, is a very nice addition that allows the room to deservedly earn a 4/5 in this category.

The Excalibur poker room is truly a relic in the industry, and is a room where many players play for the first time. Due to this fact, the room is often fondly remembered and embraced, despite its shortcomings, by nearly all players that have cut their teeth in the Las Vegas poker scene.
