**Last Updated: 03/04/09**
The M Resort and Casino grand opened with great fanfare on March 1st, 2009, and includes a 12 table poker room that is extremely well designed, aesthetically pleasing, and action driven. The resort is approximately 10 miles South of Mandalay Bay, the southernmost megaresort on the Las Vegas Strip, thus catering itself to upper middle class/upper class locals and tourists looking for an off Strip luxury driven resort. The poker room is located only a few feet from the parking garage entrance, restrooms, and sports book, this poker venue was obviously designed with the poker players’ wants in mind. Offering 12 tables, all with autoshufflers and equipped with the Genesis Gaming Bravo System (which tracks player comps electronically), the room is high on technology and is setup to compete nicely with the best mid size local’s rooms in Vegas.
Aesthetically, the room is extremely well designed and laid out, replete with modern adornments such as flat screen televisions and abstract art. The room has many positives and a few negatives worth discussing. First, the positives. The tables are nicely designed with light colored felt, faux alligator skin armrests, and proper Genesis Bravo and ShuffleMaster placement. The location of the room, adjacent to the sports book, restrooms, and parking garage entrance is genius, and is even more ideally situated then the Wynn, which I did not think was possible. The room is separated into two distinct areas. The first room is 9 tables and is designed to house the majority of the games expected to be spread (2/4LHE, 1/2NLHE, 4/8LHE, etc). The second room, housing the remaining 3 tables, is designed for higher limit games (including 2/5NLHE). The M Resort is the first local’s driven poker room to offer a separate area for higher limit players (though rare in local’s casinos, this design is common in better Strip poker venues).
Moving onto the aesthetical missteps, we must start with the table layout in the main room. The tables are a bit too close together and result in more than necessary chair bumping when navigating throughout the room. This is only a concern in the main room, as the higher limit area has ample spacing. The tables are not equipped with built in cup holders, but side tables and plastic mobile cup holders are available (though short in supply). The room, though beautifully designed, requires the front desk to have their backs to the players, often leaving dealers to desperately call for fills and open seats to no avail. This may very well be a communications issue more than a design issue, but is still worth mentioning. The chairs of the room are surprisingly non swivel or adjustable height. Seat cushions were not noticed on opening night, but the chairs are amply padded and quite comfortable, despite the lack of mobility.
Other items worth mentioning are the players’ cards, which at the time of this review’s writing, could not be generated in the poker room itself. The cards used in the poker room to track players’ hours and comps is the same card used throughout the rest of the resort for slot and pit tracking. The room has a long rail alongside slot machines and a main thoroughfare that leads to the rest of the casino from the parking garage, which lends itself to smoke floating into the room from the outside (the room itself is a non-smoking environment). The room is unable to page patrons to the poke room once their seat opens beyond a short range beyond the poker room entrance; though we were told on opening night that this will be addressed through a special text messaging service that will be implemented shortly. Over time, we expect all of these issues to be addressed and resolved, as the room’s staff becomes more acclimated to their location.
Overall, this reviewer was quite impressed with the M Resort’s poker room effort. The location of the room is superb, and coupled with the aesthetical adornments; make this room one of the local’s best choices for a higher end poker fix. Though the room could use some minor tweaks with regard to table layout, communication system, and smoke avoidance, the overall room quality is very high, and deserving of a 5 out of 5 rating.
Competition Rating: 3
The M poker room will be drawing is core base from the locals contingent that reside on the south side of Las Vegas and Henderson. Generally, these players are about the same that play at Green Valley Ranch and South Point (though the M tends to draw from the slightly wealthier neighborhoods that encircle the boundaries of the valley). These players often have a bit more money to splash around in the games, which will lend itself to more action then one might expect from a typical local’s casino (i.e. Sunset Station or Red Rock).
The player base is a good mix of younger and older players. Though there will be tourists mixed in, it is not expected that they will ever be the majority in this room. Unlike South Point (which gears itself toward value minded tourists, conventioneers, and gaming for the timeshare condo building located next door to the property), the M will rely almost exclusively from recreational hotel guests and locals that live in the vicinity. Due to the location, it is not expected that the resort will be a truly “destination” poker room for locals from around the valley, but instead will cater directly to those in the area.
Overall, the competition level of the M is tougher then the Strip rooms, but significantly softer than most stereotypical locals’ casinos. Though the competition is definitely beatable, the level of play overall does not lend itself to being a true selling point of the room.
Dealer Rating: 4
The dealers at the M Resort poker room are a mix of very good, good and average dealers from all over the city. Dealers formerly employed with Excalibur, Green Valley Ranch, South Point, IP, Treasure Island, amongst others have all come together at the M. Though most of these dealers are quite friendly, experienced, and welcoming to new players, others seem quiet, all business, and lacking in the welcoming nature that one expects from a brand new resort.
Mechanically, the dealers all seemed to do their job well, and pitch soundly. They also all seemed to be well acclimated to the rules and procedures of the new room, even on day one.
Overall, the dealing staff is above average within the industry, and shows the management’s effort to bring on board experienced and fairly well trained employees.
Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktail staff of the M poker room was carefully selected and shows a definite emphasis on beauty and personality. Most of the servers were previously employed in and around Las Vegas, so many are recognizable faces.
The service was quick, and the drinks were delivered with a smile. There was a bit of a lack of communication between the bar and the servers, however, as it was unclear whether or not premium liquors were to be made available to poker players (one girl said no to Patron tequila, whereas another said yes). Also, it seems that Red Bull will not be complimentary to players, though RockStar might be. As of this writing, the servers were unaware of exactly what premium drinks were available.
The uniforms varied from ultra-conservative black business suits to more traditional Vegas style low cut ensembles. It was unclear as to which uniform was the standard for the resort, as both were in use on opening night.
Overall, the cocktail staff is quite good, and above average in most respects. The servers all seemed to be quite experienced and quick in delivery and the drinks were made correctly and as requested. Once the semantic issues are corrected, the cocktail service here could easily earn 5 out of 5.
Management Rating: 3
The M poker room management is phenomenal in certain regards and falls short in others. This is something that will need to be addressed in order for the room to succeed in the long term. Though it is quite obvious that the senior management of the resort put strong effort into the poker room, the management on the room level lacked a real cohesiveness and player friendly attitude that is essential for long term success.
It is easily recognizable that the top decision makers within the company believe in poker, and want their poker room to be a real contender in the fiercely competitive Las Vegas poker landscape. The investment that the resort put into poker shows a true dedication to the game and its players. This is evident through the high quality furnishings, technology, design, location, comp program, etc. Based on these items alone, the room is well on a pathway to long term success, but more work needs to be done.
On the room level, the management of the room needs additional training. It was evident from opening night that proper communication protocol has not been established, and the management staff was simply unprepared for properly handling a filled to capacity poker room. Questions went unanswered by patrons, and dealers were unable to summon floors/brushes quick enough to properly maintain their trays or sustain fluid game control through quickly rendered decision calls. Of course, being opening night, it is expected that these issues will be addressed and corrected over time, but it is also expected that the staff be properly trained on proper use of the equipment made available to them to facilitate fluid room management.
Overall, the management of the M poker room is a mix of well above average and average (the well above due to the senior management, and the average due to the room level management). There is significant room for improvement, and there is no reason why the room will not remedy the communication shortcomings and become a strong contender in the Vegas locals’ casino market. It is expected that over time this section of the review will improve as the staff becomes more acclimated to the room. It is also hopeful that the friendly and welcoming personalities exuded by the dealing staff will carry over to the management to ensure a comfortable and welcoming environment to all players.
Comps Rating: 4
The M Poker room offers $1 per hour comps to all players, with no maximum per day. This is standard within the industry. The comps go directly onto the iMagine Players’ Card, and can be used throughout the property on all goods and services, including at the onsite gas station. The comps are accumulated at the table through the Genesis Bravo system.
The room also offers high hand jackpots, which are all progressive. At the time of this review’s writing, they were not tracking the high hand jackpots on an electronic screen, but it is expected that that will soon.
Overall, the comp system at the M resort is well implemented rivals all other traditional locals’ casino poker rooms. The fact that the comps go directly onto the card and can be simply swiped at food, gas, and gift shop outlets within the property is a welcome addition to the locals’ market, and gives them a significant edge over most of their local competition.
