Weekend Wait-Time: 15 minutes weekdays, weekends up to 30 minutes Smoking Allowed: No Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Planet Hollywood Poker Room Total Rating: 3.25 Room Quality Rating: 4 Planet Hollywood’s poker room matches its casino and overall resort theme quite well. The poker room is rather expansive, is an actual “room” versus a poker “area”, and offers a standard mix of tourist players mixed in with a few daily regulars. Originally built as the Aladdin, Planet Hollywood invested millions to completely re-theme the entire resort from the former Arabian theme to the modern Hollywood lifestyle theme. The poker room was moved and re-themed as well, offering new chairs, furnishings, and décor matching the sleek and modern resort itself. Aesthetically, Planet Hollywood’s poker room is a perfectly aligned extension of the main casino. It is pseudo-modern (i.e. it looks modern, but is lacking many technological features that would elevate the overall status of the room), and offers the same chrome, lacquered wood, and taupe colors found in the rest of the trendy casino. With regard to technology, the poker room at Planet Hollywood tends to fall behind most of its competitors. The list tracking is done on paper, there are no hourly comps offered on the player’s card, and auto-shufflers are included in only 4 of the 15 live tables. A room of this caliber is expected to display the most modern technology (much like MGM Grand, a similarly themed property), but it seems that PH falls short in this area. The noise level of the poker room can also be extraordinarily high due to the placement of the poker room directly adjacent to a bar/lounge that offers Karaoke nightly. The chairs are a personal pet peeve of this reviewer. Of all 50+ poker rooms, Planet Hollywood offers the most oddly designed and least comfortable chairs that this reviewer has ever come across. Though they are adjustable and swivel based (on wheels), some of the chairs slope to the front, and are fairly easy to slip from. The biggest problem that Planet Hollywood’s poker room has (and in fact, this is the biggest problem with the entire resort) is easily surmised in one word: PARKING. Planet Hollywood offers the absolute worst self parking/valet combination in all of Las Vegas. In order to Self Park at PH, one must park in the back, and walk through the entire mall before entering the casino. This was a very poorly designed choice by the original Aladdin architectural team, and it has not been corrected by Planet Hollywood. The valet puts customers in very close proximity to the poker room, but the valet is often full (even on the weeknights), and requires a significant tip up front in order to get your vehicle parked (or be a hotel guest). The location of the poker room is ideal for customers walking in from the Strip; however, as the poker room is directly adjacent to a Strip entrance, which does assist greatly in bringing in new customers. Overall, the Planet Hollywood poker room serves its purpose and is, aesthetically, a very attractive poker venue, but is certainly not a destination poker room. The poker room recently decided to raise its rake to $5 + $1 jackpot. This was the first casino aside from the Harrahs properties to raise the rake to $5 + $1. Competition Rating: 4 Generally, the competition in the Planet Hollywood poker room is pretty inexperienced. Drawing mainly from the hotel, the players here are usually casual recreational tourists. In the months since opening, though, they have built a fairly significant base of local low limit grinders and wannabe pros. Due to the soft reputation of the games at Planet Hollywood; daily regulars have become significantly more common, especially in the NL games. These players are usually easy to spot, though, and are certainly in the minority of this poker room’s general clientele. This room offers little in the terms of frills (inconvenient parking, no hourly comps, higher than average rake, etc), so the smarter players tend to avoid the poker room at PH, thus leaving the tables ripe with recreational walk in players and hotel guests. Dealer Rating: 4 The dealers at PH are generally all very competent and control the game well. Some dealers are very sound mechanically and possess friendly and welcoming personalities, while others seem to get by on skill alone, and lack the friendly aspects that some others seem to exude. Few to any mistakes were seen during the multiple playing sessions that this reviewer experienced, and the staff is truly a solid selling point of this room. Cocktail Rating: 2 Cocktail service in the Planet Hollywood poker room leaves much to be desired. In an odd stroke of low budget decision making, the cocktail staff is very limited as to what they can serve in the poker room. No frozen drinks whatsoever can be served (in the casino let alone the poker room), no top shelf liquor, no red bull, and no Fiji water. The cocktail staff seemed to all have slight attitudes, and though relatively quick, none seemed to really care all that much about their customers or their jobs. Management Rating: 3 Management of the Planet Hollywood poker room is not on par with what you would expect of a large resort such as this. The tracking system is on paper and pen, there is no player card tracking of comps, and auto shufflers are only in a third of the tables. When dealing with a lack of technology such as this, the management staff of the room must step up and put additional effort in to show that their room, despite the lack of material investment, can still compete with the comparable Strip properties. Unfortunately, it seems that the management of the Planet Hollywood poker room seems to lack passion and a true commitment to poker. Though a few managers are quite entertaining, welcoming, and possess winning personalities, it seems that they are in the minority, and the majority are those that seem rather burnt out on their jobs and possess low morale. It also seems that a few are lacking in true professionalism when on the job, which relegates PH to being only a casual poker room, and not one to be taken seriously. Comps Rating: 1 The comps at Planet Hollywood are amongst the worst in the industry. After playing for 6 hours, you can get a sandwich comp upon request. This is a similar comp system employed by Bellagio and Mirage. The problem is that this resort does NOT compete with Bellagio or Mirage. Even rooms as small as Imperial Palace, Ballys, Paris, etc all give at least $1 per hour comps on their players’ card. The fact that a resort such as PH does not offer hourly comps simply means that they view themselves as significantly better than they actually are. They do not even offer a poker room rate for their players. Planet Hollywood does offer high hand jackpots, which are all capped at $599. They also offer random drawings that involve winning luxury prizes such as cars and motorcycles. Planet Hollywood Poker Room News Planet Hollywood Editor Review is now posted!
