Editor's Review - Red Rock Poker Room
Total Rating: 4.20
Room Quality Rating: 5
The Red Rock poker room is most certainly the nicest poker room of the Stations Casinos and one of the nicest in all of Las Vegas. Red Rock Resort, located in Summerlin opened after much anticipation on April 18th, 2006, and along with it came a 20 table poker room designed with the poker player in mind.
Aesthetically, the Red Rock poker room is quite a beautiful venue. Dark wood veneers compliment the gunmetal lighting fixtures and tan leather chairs. All chairs are adjustable swivel chairs, and the tables all have thick armrests and cup holders. Side tables are also available, as is a coffee and water bar. Also, Red Rock was the first poker room in Las Vegas to offer restrooms in the poker room itself, a rare but welcome amenity to poker players.
The location of the Red Rock poker room was well thought out. It is located directly adjacent to the sports book, and directly next to a main entrance that leads to the north parking lot.
The technology of the poker room is on par with all other Stations rooms in that it utilizes the Bravo player tracking system that tracks players’ comps at the table. The list management system is electronic, and players can sign up for the games through the self service kiosk located outside of the poker room or in the poker room with the staff.
The games most commonly spread are quite wide in variety. 1/2NLHE, 2/5NLHE,2/4LHE,4/8LHE, and 4/8 Omaha 8 are the most common daily offerings. A 4/8 mixed game springs up every now and then, as does an 8/16LHE game.
Overall, the Red Rock poker room is one of the top rooms in Las Vegas, and definitely the nicest of the locals’ casinos.
Competition Rating: 2
The competition at the Red Rock poker room is often quite tough, especially in the NLHE games (much more in the 2/5 game versus the 1/2). This room has a strong amount of tourists mixed in with the daily grinders, but the locals are the vast majority of the poker rooms’ clientele (as with all Stations casinos). The NLHE games are often filled with at least 5-6 daily regulars or more, and the 2/5 game is almost all daily regulars.
Red Rock tends to bring in locals from all parts of the Valley, and not necessarily those that only reside in the Summerlin area. The customers here are generally middle aged, though there are quite a few younger players mixed in with the older regulars. The Limit games tend to have good action, and the Omaha game is one of the more friendly Omaha games (especially when compared to the Orleans Omaha 8 game where the locals aren’t necessarily the nicest or the cleanest).
Overall, the competition of the Red Rock poker room is not the major draw of the room. The games are often quite hit or miss, but a good player can easily exploit the many soft spots that often take seats in the many games that Red Rock offers.
Dealer Rating: 5
When the Red Rock poker room opened, the best dealers from all the previously existing Stations properties were brought over to open the room. This makes the Red Rock truly a best of the best when it comes to competency of the dealing staff. All are experienced, knowledgeable as to live game protocol on all levels, and mechanically sound.
All dealers are fully acclimated to all poker games spread, and deal all games quickly with little to no errors on any given shift. Though many have friendly and vibrant personalities, the general vibe of the Red Rock poker room is strongly poker focused, thus most dealers (especially in the NLHE games) tend to stay quiet and simply concentrate on dealing quickly and proficiently. This is greatly appreciated by the players, and makes the entire room a pleasurable place to play cards on any day.
Cocktail Rating: 4
As is the standard with most Stations rooms, the cocktail service is usually quick and efficient, and served by some very attractive girls. Red Rock resort is highest end luxury resort within the Stations franchise, and the cocktail service reflects that. Most top shelf liquor is available, as is Red Bull. The service bar is located directly across from the poker room, so drinks are usually brought quickly and often the room is covered by more than a single waitress.
There are times, especially late at night, where the cocktail service does become painfully slow. This is fairly common with casinos late at night as they often leave one or two waitresses to cover an entire casino. It seems that Red Rock is on the same program.
Management Rating: 4
Though the Red Rock poker room is quite technologically advanced, the Red Rock poker room management tends to fall within the just above average category. The lists are not updated as often as they should be, and it seems that they brush staff does not monitor the open seats on the screen as often as they should, as dealers still yell out for open seats when they have them, and often players monitor the open seats quicker than the staff.
The management staff is experienced and used to handling a large poker room, but is not necessarily the friendliest or most welcoming staff. The dealers working as brushes are usually the ones that greet and welcome the players to the room much more then the management themselves.
Decisions are made accurately, and it seems that the management staff in general is very knowledgeable with proper poker procedures and protocol. When the room is very busy, it is tougher to oversee so many games at once, and often floor decisions can become quite delayed due to the lack of roaming management staff throughout the room.
Comps Rating: 4
Red Rock follows the same comp system that the rest of the Station’s group follows. Players earn $1 per hour, and the comp goes directly onto the players’ card. The comp dollars can be redeemed at any Stations property for food and beverage, as well as in the gift shop and at Kids Quest. Currently, triple comps ($3 per hour) are awarded during the 3AM to 9AM timeframe.
Stations Casinos do not offer high hand jackpots for quads or straight flushes, but they do pay $250 for Royal Flushes in Hold’em. They offer two Bad Beat jackpots; one is a joint property promotion, where everyone who is playing in every Stations poker room received a players share when it hits. It is usually Quads beaten.
They also offer a 10K property Bad Beat jackpot which is usually Aces full of 10s beaten. The property jackpot is paid to the table only. Red Rock also offers an Omaha jackpot on their Omaha 8 game.
The advantage of Red Rock is the high quality restaurants that it offers in addition to an expansive gift shop, a luxury bowling alley, and Kids Quest (onsite hourly childcare). Poker room comps can be redeemed at any of these onsite facilities.
