Editor's Review - Treasure Island (TI) Poker Room Total Rating: 3.90 Room Quality Rating: 4 **Last Updated: 10/15/09** The Treasure Island (TI) poker room opened in April of 2006, and offers 8 tables replete with autoshufflers and the Genesis Bravo system that tracks all players comps directly at the table using the Treasure Island Players’ Card. The room is quite technologically advanced, utilizing modern poker tracking technology to track the waiting lists and the players' earned hourly comps. Also, the room offers an electronic pager to players waiting for a seat in a game, which can be used throughout the entire casino (though not in the hotel). The electronic list can be viewed from the TI hotel rooms as well, so players can monitor their list progression on the screen while waiting in their room. Aesthetically, the TI poker room is modern and rather trendy. The somewhat dim lighting compliments the orange and dark wood veneers, and is further aligned with the current trendy theme of the casino through the use of modern abstract wood and paintings adorning the walls. The room offers plasma televisions on all walls, and the sound is available for those wanting to catch up on current sporting events. The location of the poker room is both a blessing and a curse, as it is very conveniently located in relation to the self parking garage, though it is quite far from both the valet as well as the sports book. The weakest link when it comes to overall room quality of the TI poker room is when it comes to the poker room chairs. The chairs, though generally comfortable, do not offer adjustable height or swivel bases, which is rather surprising considering that many other modern rooms employ this added amenity in their rooms. The chairs notwithstanding, the room itself is very high quality, built for comfort and convenience, and to allow for a sleek modern edge in the modern competitive poker climate. The tables are all spaced out nicely, and the podium acts as a poker cashier for players. Overall, the room at the TI is easily the nicest small room in Las Vegas with regards to technology and overall room quality. Competition Rating: 3 The TI poker room caters largely to its hotel guests and a solid base of local regulars, which have increased greatly, as of October 2009, due to fairly aggressive freeroll and hours based promotions that bring in a firm amount of local grinders. Though the majority of the players at the TI are tourists, more then a few local grinders have discovered the TI, and come out to feed on the visitors, both in the tournaments as well as the cash games. The NL game at TI used to be one of the softest NL games in the city, giving an edge to the better players by offering a higher than average maximum buy in ($500). Since then, more and more local grinders have discovered how soft the room is (coupled with the more then generous hourly comps at $2 per hour), taking away some of the games juicy luster. However; the game, when compared to similar games offered at Caesars, Palms, and even Binions, is still quite soft and provides an ample opportunity for a good score with little invested. The tournament field is another story. The Head Hunter tournament is the crown jewel of this room as far as tournaments go, and its field continues to steadily grow, and the player pool increasing in both number and general quality of play. More and more local Vegas tournament grinders are turning out for the Headhunter making the field a solid mixture of weak and strong players. Generally, the games at TI are good, but not as good as they once were. The 2/4LHE game is always soft, and proves popular amongst the beginners and those looking to grind out a small profit with little risk. The NLHE game can play very deep or very short, depending on who sits down and when. Overall, the competition at the TI is a mixed bag, and not as soft as it once was due to the local's based hourly promotions. Dealer Rating: 4 The dealers at the Treasure Island poker room are friendly, receptive to courtesy, and control the games well. Despite most being quite young, and few having dealt prior to getting hired at TI when the room opened in April of 2006, the dealers all exemplify strong customer service skills, and generally make all players feel welcome. Chris Coffin, the former TI poker room manager, spent many hours training and instructing his dealing staff from the get go, and bred an efficient and customer friendly staff. The dealers, mechanically, are not necessarily in the same league as the Wynn, but what some lack in mechanics, they truly make up in attitude and attentiveness. Catering to the players that the TI poker room generally attracts, the dealing staff was well picked, groomed, and preened. The dealing staff is very approachable, friendly, and seem to go out of their way to identify players by name, and welcome them to the table/room. The dealing staff is one of the strongest aspects of the TI poker room. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service at the Treasure Island poker room has taken a downturn as of October 2009. Though it was extremely strong back in 2007 and 2008, the acquisition of the property from MGM Mirage has taken its toll on the cocktail selection and speed. Though generally still pretty quick, there have been a few times when the cocktail service can slow down to a crawl mainly due to light staffing from the beverage department. Red Bull is no longer served in the poker room, but frozen drinks are still available. The waitresses are union at Treasure Island. This means that the cocktail staff is generally not held to the youthful physically attractive standards that one might expect from a typical Las Vegas casino (for that see the non-union properties like the Wynn, Venetian, and South Point). Having said that, TI employs one of only two waitresses in the city that this reviewer considers to be the very best overall cocktail servers with regards to competency, friendliness, beauty, and speed in Las Vegas. These two waitresses are the only two that this reviewer always, consistently tips at a rate of $5 per drink, without fail, every time he orders. Andrea, a cocktail server that usually works Swing shift at Treasure Island, is one of the two. The other one is Ashley, who works at South Point, usually on graveyard. These two ladies truly personify customer service and exemplary cocktailing. As of October 2009, the cocktail service seems to be in decline at TI, but perhaps things will improve as the resort continues to get used to its new owner. Management Rating: 4 As of October 2009, the management of the Treasure Island poker room is one of many selling points of this room. The list is tracked electronically, the players’ comps are tracked at the table, and pagers are available for those wanting to spend time in the casino while waiting for a seat in a game. The management staff are all experienced and young. The room is managed by Troy Horning, a young and business minded individual that came over to TI from the Mirage. Kurtis Browning is the Swing Shift manager, promoted from dealer, and David Lie is the dayshift manager also promoted from a dealing position. The room promotes from within, and offers a very friendly management staff. The only major criticism of the room's senior management is the fact that the room shuts down completely when the last game at night breaks. It is a sad state of affairs when a poker room actually closes down due to a lack of a live game, and doesn’t reopen until a specified time (in the case of TI, the reopening time is 10:30AM, just in time for the 11AM tournament). This criticism falls onto the general room management, as it seems that the staff should be able to come up with a proper advertising/promotions campaign that would prevent a room of this caliber from consistently going dark (i.e. having all live games break) on a near nightly basis. The fact that the room closes on graveyard and does not re-open until before noon is a strong detriment to the long term vitality of the room, and hurts the room in the grand scheme of things. People walking by a closed room are less likely to return to the room when it is open for business, as people will remember a closed and shut down card room. Most rooms that decided to close on graveyard (which was a going trend in late 2008) have reverted on this decision, but TI continues close when the last game breaks. It is unfortunate that the room is unable to maintain a solid regular base of players that are willing to play at all hours. Comperable rooms such as Harrah's, Bally's, and Imperial Palace have introduced aggressive morning promotions to stimulate their action early in the day which helps to keep games all day. It is wholly unfortunate that a room as nice as Treasure Island is suffering due to a lack of consistent action. Despite the room management being personable and extremely strong, the senior management decision to continue to close the room and not come up with strong morning promotions are leading to the room's unfortnate detriment. Comps Rating: 5 The comps offers at the TI poker room are amongst the best in the city. The comps offered to poker players at Treasure Island are very generous, and reflect very well on the resorts respect and appreciation for its poker players. Players are awarded $2 per hour on their Treasure Island players’ card (switched over from MGM Mirage card in October 2009). These comp dollars are redeemable for use in any restaurant at Treasure Island, as well as for tableside food service that is delivered to your seat in the poker room. TI offers a competitive poker room rate that can be arranged directly through the poker room via the casino host. Also, they offer High Hand Jackpots, which include progressive Royal Flushes that do not cap until $5000. They also offer a Bad Beat jackpot, which is a flat amount paid out when two jackpot hands collide. As of October 2009, TI is offering a host of promotions, including a cash prize wheel for high hands that use only 1 card and for players that play 25 hours in the room (wheel values are doubled when players go to the wheel for 25 hours). Also, they are running a 50K freeroll for players that play at least 30 hours in the room. Overall, the comps offered by TI are extremely generous, and truly elevate TI to be one of the best overall small rooms in the city.
