Editor's Review - Bellagio Poker Room Total Rating: 4.45 Room Quality Rating: 5 **Last Updated: 12/02/09** The Bellagio poker room is known in the industry as the true definition of Vegas poker. However, the room has certainly seen better days. With fierce competition from other very high end comparable properties such as Venetian and Wynn, the Bellagio has certainly lost a significant amount of its luster. Though the room quality is still very high, the room is also showing significant signs of wear and tear, most obviously in the chairs, which have been in use since 2003, and though swivel and are adjustable height, many have mechanics that are extremely worn out, and lack the firm support that they once had. The tables are all equipped with autoshufflers, and side tables are available for foodservice, but much of the room is packed so tightly that waitresses are often unable to maneuver between the tables let alone food servers. The room does not utilize any sort of electronic wait list system (despite having large plasma televisions flanking both sides of the poker room main entrance). Instead, the room offers 3 podiums that service the room (one for low stakes, one for high stakes, and one for Bobby’s Room). Though it is still very much a world class poker venue, and remains to be where the highest limit games are consistently spread (including the “Big Game”), the room will need some serious work to maintain this image in the months and years to come. Aesthetically, the room is decorated with a high end aura that matches the entire property well. The light fixtures are modern and tasteful and the carpeting and wall sconces are all high end and apportion the room well. The management podiums are all adorned in white marble, with dark wood accents, and the walls showcase various well known poker players (which is a bit tacky in this reviewer’s opinion). The remaining walls are covered in leather and marble. Bobby’s Room is an entire world within itself, replete with a private sitting area, two poker tables, and a sideboard for food and refreshments. Overall, the aesthetical aspects of the Bellagio poker room are very high end, and its location, with two half walls surrounding the room allowing for maximum rail birding, make this one of the most viewed and respected rooms in the city, despite many little things that are slowly tainting the rooms overall reputation. The largest room quality issue with the Bellagio is the layout of the room. This in conjunction with the lack of any sort of list management technology really taints the image that the Bellagio is working hard to maintain. Years ago, when the Bellagio was one of only two high end rooms in town, it could easily get away with a crammed room and no modern technology, but those days are long over. Rooms like Venetian and Wynn have really stepped up to redefine what a large world class poker room should look and feel like, thus putting a large dent in not only Bellagio’s customer base, but the view of the room in general from all players eyes. The room quality of the Bellagio poker room just barely earns a 5 out of 5 rating. In order to remain competitive, the room will need to address the significant issues that it has with regards to upkeep, overall room layout, and lack of modern poker room management technology. Competition Rating: 3 The Bellagio competition isn’t nearly as tough as one would think, especially at the 2/5NLHE and below levels, but the majority of the games spread in the room are 2/5 and above (including 15/30LHE, 40/80 Mixed, 100/200LHE) so the competition level with regards to the room as a whole, cannot rank above a 3 out of 5. The lowest limit game offered is 4/8LHE, and even that game has daily grinders that are certainly better than the average players. The 1/2 and 2/5NLHE games are often reputed to be the best low limit NL games in town simply because many poker players (especially wannabe types) want the “experience” of playing at Las Vegas’ most well known world class poker venue. This ideal makes many of the low limit NL games very soft, loose, and beatable. Granted, this also means that the number of professional players is higher at Bellagio than any other poker room in the city. It is not uncommon to see well known as well as complete unknown pros intermingling at various tables at the Bellagio. Cash plays in their NL games, and many players love to have cash on the table if for nothing else, but intimidation. Overall, the competition level of the Bellagio poker room is a mixture of very tough and very easy, but more so the former then the latter, especially when playing at the level above the lowest offered. The Bellagio continues to be where most of the major known pros call home, and that is reflected in the competition level of the room as a whole. Dealer Rating: 5 The dealers at the Bellagio are known as being the best in the industry. Though this reputation is true, for the most part, the dealer quality has certainly dropped slightly in the last two years, mainly due to the opening of comparable world class rooms at Wynn and Venetian which certainly took some of the better dealers from the Bellagio through their own recruitment. Also, it became well known about two years ago that the Bellagio hired some break in dealers to fill some positions due to their cash game and tournament overflow. This action was well talked about in the industry, and put a significant taint on the accepted view of the Bellagio dealers being the best of the best. The dealers still qualify for a 5 out of 5 rating, as all seem to be very mechanically sound, maintain solid game control, and refrain from much discussion while dealing. Though their personalities are often kept hidden, as the obvious focus at the Bellagio is “all business” the dealers are also used to rotating through both high limit and very low limit games, where their personalities are allowed to shine a bit more. Overall, the dealer quality of the Bellagio poker room is very high, but not necessarily the best in Las Vegas. The fact that all dealers are trained on all games is a major plus for the dealing staff, and shows a solid training effort has been done to all staff members. Though the staff has lost some of its best to neighboring competitive properties, the dealers remaining are still amongst the best in the industry. Cocktail Rating: 5 The cocktail service at the Bellagio poker room is quite good. The waitresses work hard to service the room, and usually at least 2 waitresses are needed to handle the room, but that is not always the case. Nearly all premium drinks are available, but it is notable that some are not, and are assigned a charge if ordered. This includes Red Bull and Fiji water (Fiji is complimentary at Venetian and Red Bull is complimentary at Harrah’s). The waitresses are attractive, but being that Bellagio (specifically MGM Mirage corporation) is a union property with regards to its cocktailing staff, so a few waitresses are more mature than one would see at Venetian or Wynn (non union properties). Overall, the service is quick, except during peak hours. Though the service bar is only steps away from the main entrance to the poker room, it seems that the waitresses are often assigned to cover larger areas then just the poker department, thus creating wait times that can often seem longer than necessary. As of October 2009, this reviewer was pleased to see upwards of 3 waitresses covering the Bellagio poker room. This is a significant improvement to the service speed and overall rating. Management Rating: 4 The management of the Bellagio poker room (which includes customer service, room management, technology investments, and list management) is the room’s weakest link, but has improved significantly as of December 2009. Though the room offers phenomenal game selection, and seems to treat its high end players quite well, the average Bellagio customer does not seem to get anywhere near the service that one would expect from a world class venue. In fact, the room has an extremely negative overall reputation with regards to customer service within the Vegas poker world. This is largely due to the floor and brush staff that has been known to exude arrogance, rudeness, and personify elitism like no other room in town. Also, the room does not accept call ins to get on the waitlist, which is at the rooms overall detriment. The attitude of the floor staff notwithstanding, the room has significantly improved its customer management system by adding the Genesis Bravo waitlist and comp tracking program. All waitlists are now electronic, and players earn a flat hourly comp on all its games, which range from $1 to $2 per hour depending on the limit being played. This is a world class improvement to the room, which has elevated the numerical ranking of the management in this section. With the new electronic waitlist system, players now know where they stand as far as a wait, and can assess their wait time accordingly. Open seats are tracked electronically, which significantly cuts the wait time further and allows for a much more fluid room management of guests. The tournaments are well run and managed well. This is largely the reason that the rating of the Bellagio management earns a 2 out of 5 instead of a 1. Jack McClelland is the tournament director of the Bellagio poker room, and his reputation, experience, and skill shines in all of their daily and special event tournaments. Overall, the management of the Bellagio poker room has improved greatly in the past few months of 2009. Though the attitudes of the floor personnell are still quite abhorrent and the layout of the room is still cramped, the overall management has improved due to the addition of modern technology. There is no question that the Venetian management still trumps the Bellagio on many levels (including room layout and attitude), but Bellagio is making strong strides to maintain its top world class status. Comps Rating: 4 The Bellagio poker room has improved their comps prgram significantly in 2009. Players now all earn a flat comp amount based on their game of choice, which varies from $1 to $2 per hour. Earned comps can be used at the Cafe, the Buffet, the Asian noodle shop, and the snack bar/deli. Their poker room rate requires a varying amount of daily play and is usually slightly less than the casino or rack rate offered to most MGM Mirage Players Card members. The poker room utilizes the MGM Mirage players’ card to track hours played award comps. This is a recent addition to the room and is a welcome improvement to the room as a whole. Overall, the comps at the Bellagio poker room are average within the industry, which is a strong improvement over what they once were not more than a few months ago. With the addition of the Genesis Bravo comp tracking system, the Bellagio is now inline with other world class venues in Las Vegas, such as Venetian, though their still are several detriments that keep the Bellagio ranking below its comperable counterparts (largely due to room layout and staff attitudes). With the new comp system in place, Bellagio is going the right direction in maintaining its world class status.
