Editor's Review - Green Valley Ranch Poker Room
Total Rating: 4.00
Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 09/30/09**
The poker room at Green Valley Ranch is easily one of the top aesthetic and technology driven rooms within the Station’s empire. The GVR poker room is expansive, encompassing 22 tables, making it the largest overall poker room within the Station’s casino chain, though nowhere near the busiest (for that, see Red Rock). All tables are equipped with automatic shufflers and the Genesis Bravo comp/table management system that tracks player’s hours, comps, and open seats via a comprehensive management computer based system. The room is laid out nicely, with ample room around every single table, and two management stations, whereupon players can get on the list from the front desk and cash out from the central management station. When this room was built, it was considered the top overall room within the chain, and despite the significantly higher business levels that Red Rock generates, GVR still holds the title of being the nicest overall room within the Stations’ empire.
The room is quite functional in its layout. The central front desk offers a self service sign up kiosk so players can simply swipe their Station’s Boarding Pass player’s card to get on the various waitlists. The front desk is designed to allow for a live attendant to monitor the open seats and sign up players upon entry, but due to budget restraints, the front desk is often not manned during off-peak hours. This is not necessarily a detriment, as the room is inviting, and all signups can be done fluidly at either the self service computer located at the front desk or the central cashier desk in the middle of the room. All 22 tables are spaced out with significant room in between each table, and the room is spread out, using all available space. Due to the lack of high business volume (due partly to the opening of competing properties close by such as South Point and the M Resort), the room rarely has more than 6-8 games running at any given time, allowing all tables to be serviced quickly by the central management desk. Because the room is so spacious, the atmosphere tends to be quiet and action driven. There is music that is playing which adds ambiance to an otherwise nicely focused and quiet atmosphere. Little to no slot noise is heard in this poker room.
The room accoutrements are impressive and add to the overall room quality significantly. The dark wood, television placement, and technology are all impressive. The tables at GVR are standard, with leather arm rails, and wooden race tracks. As mentioned previously, all tables are equipped with the Genesis Bravo system, and all games are tracked on the electronic display, along with open seats. The technology that Stations has implemented in all its rooms shows a commitment to poker and appreciation of its players. The area for concern lies with the chairs. It is unfortunate that the new chairs that were given to rooms that opened post-2006 are not seen here. Red Rock, Santa Fe Station, and Aliante Station all have the new, extremely comfortable swivel chairs with adjustable height and backs. GVR, however, has thick padded non swivel chairs. Though generally comfortable, they do not come close to matching the comfort afforded by the chairs at the newer Station poker room venues.
The aesthetics of the room match the property, as do the subdued color palette that the room is currently adorned. Light taupe intermingles with dark brown leathers, Mahogany veneers, and ample television placement throughout the entire room allow for good sports viewing from nearly every table. The waitlists are displayed above the central management desk as well as at the front of the room. Sports are shows on all other televisions located above all tables that align the walls as well as on the large pillars that frame the room. Tournament clocks are displayed via the Genesis Bravo tournament tracking system which shows levels, blinds, and payouts with neat organization. The room is an actual room, with three permanent walls, and a large entry thoroughfare that branches off to self parking, the gaming pit, and the Oyster Bar. The dark wood veneers compliment the chairs and the arm rails, and allow for an overall intimate comfortable feel, despite it being a large 22 table room.
Overall, the Green Valley Ranch poker room is easily one of the nicest off Strip rooms in town. Competing directly with rooms such as M Resort, South Point, and Sunset Station, GVR is easily the nicest and largest overall room on the south side of the Vegas valley. The 22 table room is large enough to run several games and tournament simultaneously, yet not so large that it loses its intimacy. Though the room is physically the largest room in the chain, and in fact one of the largest poker rooms in the city, the business level does not necessitate this, and the room could probably survive quite well with half the number of tables that it currently has. Lack of need for 22 tables notwithstanding, GVR is still a popular room, with a solid tournament schedule, comfortable aesthetics, and a very pleasant poker driven atmosphere.
Competition Rating: 3
The Green Valley Ranch poker room draws mainly from the locals that reside in the Henderson area as well as tourists that desire an off Strip luxury resort property. The games tend to be tight passive most of the time, with action increasing greatly on the evenings and weekends, when more casual tourists and recreational players come out to play. Though the competition level is average within the industry, the games are better than one would expect from most locals driven rooms (due at least in part to the higher average number of tourists here than most off Strip properties).
The game selection is slightly above average, with 1/2NLHE, 2/4LHE, and 4/8LHE being the dominant games. 2/5 spreads daily as of September 2009, and offers slightly higher stake action. Non Hold’em games are rare, though a HORSE cash games occasionally gets going following their Wednesday night HORSE tournament.
The LHE games are very traditional Stations games, usually quite weak tight, with passive play being the most common. The large Bad beat Jackpot drives much of the action in the LHE games, and when the BBJ gets high, it is expected that the number of LHE games increases along with it.
The NLHE games are filled with daily grinders and recreational tourists, which make for an interesting contrast most of the time. The locals that play daily aren’t necessarily good, but often breed slow games with little action (especially during the day).
Overall, the competition level of the GVR poker room is as expected. Quite average within the local’s casino poker industry, the average game at GVR is comparable to most other Stations or Coast games, with the possible exception of the 2/5NLHE game, which can often be quite action driven.
Dealer Rating: 4
The Green Valley Ranch dealing staff is well above average. All are competent, mechanically sound, and many have very welcoming and friendly personalities. When the room opened, several dealers from within the Stations chain transferred over to open the room, allowing the room to be largely filled with experienced, strong dealers that all do their jobs well, and maintain solid game control. The only possible exception to this is when a mixed or HORSE game starts up, which forces the staff to deal games that are not regularly spread, thus causing light confusion and at times, slow games. This is a small exception, though.
The personalities of the dealing staff are geared toward familiarity. With the Genesis Bravo tableside units in place, the staff often addresses all players by name, and track action by name. This breeds a familiarity that is often lost in many rooms. Even players that are not regulars are treated with a casual familiarity that is appreciated by all players. The games are controlled well, and are often fast paced, as the staff is largely veterans in the industry that know how to handle all player types well.
Overall, the dealing staff at Green Valley Ranch is strong, and possibly the best within the Station’s chain. Few to any common dealer errors are noted here, which is a welcome relief to this reviewer. The dealing staff are generally all pleasant, welcoming, and professional, with an emphasis on familiarity and business.
Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktail service at the Green Valley Ranch poker room is above average. The servers seem to all have customer friendly demeanors and are able to handle multiple orders with fluidity. Most are quite attractive and add to the overall higher end luxury that the resort tries to achieve. Though the service speed can vary greatly, the availability of most call liquors is impressive for a local’s room, and the availability of Red Bull in the can puts the room’s cocktail service above most rooms in general.
The service speed has been a consistent cause for concern at most Station’s properties, and GVR is no exception. It seems that the girls are often inundated when it comes to poker due to the high volume of drink requests, which can often cause delays that exceed a half hour for drink turnaround. This is well balanced, though, by the personalities of the servers and the drink quality, which tends to be quite high.
Overall, the cocktail service at the GVR poker room is slightly above average within the industry. The drink selection and quality are high and goes along with the solid personalities of the waitresses. The only reason the cocktail service is tarnished is due to the slowness of the drink order fulfillment, which varies by shift and even by waitress. GVR earns a 4/5 in this category, and has the potential to garner a 5/5 should the speed improve.
Management Rating: 4
The Green Valley Ranch management has improved since the room opened in 2005, then reopened in 2006. Though most of the floor personnel are very welcoming and generally friendly, they would have earned an average 3/5 rating had it not been for one single employee that single handedly elevates the overall status of the room. This will be addressed in the subsequent paragraph. The management staff seems to all be knowledgeable about poker, and generally know how to run the room well. For all intents and purposes, this room’s management is average within the industry; with a slight vie toward the above average category. The management staff, though welcoming, tend to cluster together behind the central management desk instead of walking the floor or tending the front desk. A few solid floor people have moved on from GVR to competing properties, which is unfortunate, but expected in the ever changing Las Vegas poker scene.
The room seems to be managed well, with a few exceptions. The front desk is not manned around the clock, which causes some business to float away, and is probably due to budget cuts which have affected all casino departments. The dealers, acting as brushes, are quick to service all customer chip requests and other situations that occur. This management assigned function demonstrates a solid use of the dealer lineup and game juggling arrangement.
If it had not been for one particular employee, the management at GVR would more than likely receive a solid 3/5, which denotes average to slightly above average. However, because they are fortunate enough to employ Tammy, their rating increases to a solid 4/5 overall. Tammy is the strongest poker room employee that this reviewer has ever come across. She is extremely friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable about all things poker. She is very well educated on poker room management procedures, dealing procedures, and customer handling. Her customer service skills are phenomenal and include facial and name recognition. She is simply an outstanding employee that is able to multitask like few others in the industry, and single handedly elevates the overall management rating of the Green Valley Ranch poker room. GVR is extremely lucky to employ such an employee.
Overall, the Green Valley Ranch management is above average. Station’s corporate treats poker very well, and this is reflected in this venue. The room is managed well by the staff, and with Tammy on staff, the room easily achieves a 4/5 rating. The welcoming and knowledgeable attitudes of most of the floor people are appreciated by this reviewer and are further complimented by Tammy, a superemployee. The GVR management is most certainly one of the stronger teams within the local’s casino market.
Comps Rating: 5
Green Valley Ranch poker room follows the same comp system that the rest of the Station’s group follows. Players earn $1 per hour for cash games and tournaments, and the comp goes directly onto the players’ card. The comp dollars can be redeemed at any Stations property for food and beverage, as well as in the gift shop. Currently, triple comps ($3 per hour) are awarded during the 3AM to 9AM timeframe.
All Stations recently updated their comps to award $1 an hour for tournaments as well as cash games. They are the only casinos that I am aware of that do this.
Stations Casinos do not offer high hand jackpots for quads, but they do pay $200 for Straight Flushes and $250 for Royal Flushes in Hold’em. They offer two Bad Beat jackpots; one is a joint property promotion, where everyone who is playing in every Stations poker room received a players share when it hits. It is usually Quads beaten. They also offer a 10K property Bad Beat jackpot which is Aces full of 10s beaten. The property jackpot is paid to the table only, and is a static amount.
In addition to the standard promotions that all Stations offer their poker room customers, each property is allowed a jackpot amount that can be used for a monthly promotion of their choice. It could be a monthly freeroll, a flopped quad bonus, or something else along those lines. As this monthly promotion changes frequently, I recommend contacting GVR directly to find out what the current property specific promotion is this month.
Poker room comps can be redeemed at any of the onsite food venues, but cannot be redeemed at the neighboring District shopping center. GVR offers a nice selection of onsite dining, though, including Hank’s premium steakhouse, China Spice, and a few other higher quality food venues. Poker room comps can be redeemed at any of these venues with the simple swipe of the players’ card and player PIN number entry.
Overall, the comps at GVR (and all Station’s casinos for that matter) are well above average and really set the standard for how poker room comps should be utilized. The user friendly Boarding Pass player’s card really revolutionized the poker comp system, and all competing properties should really look to the Station’s model for how to handle poker room comps and their versatility of use.
