Editor's Review - Silverton Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.25

Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 07/10/09**

The Silverton poker room recently relocated and updated their poker room offering with a well positioned room, high quality furnishings, superb layout, and hardly any games. For some reason, this room’s true bread and butter is its daily tournament which usually spawns a second cash game. The main game is 3/6LHE, and spreads most of the day. When the tournament starts, a NLHE game often starts afterwards, but not every day. It seems that though the Silverton is quite a nice poker venue, the locals that frequent the establishment are either not card players or have chosen to play at more action oriented competitors like South Point and M.

Had the poker room at Silverton be relocated to a Strip property, it would certainly be one of the nicest on the Strip, comparable aesthetically to Treasure Island or Monte Carlo. It is a comfortable, intimate room, with a large brush desk, and tables well spread apart, with high back chairs. Technology is solid, with the Genesis Bravo management program being used in conjunction with the tableside swipe units. Though comfortable, the chairs lack wheels and adjustable height, but due to the thick cushioning, this is not an issue. The dark wood veneers compliment the rustic woodsy taupe leather and felts. The room has three permanent walls and one long half wall that runs along the thoroughfare leading from the new parking garage to the main casino.

The half wall provides a nice chance for railbirds to check out the action, but for some reason, the management likes to hide their NL game (when it goes) against the East wall (which is blocked by most walls), which does nothing more than hurt the game, since people walking by can’t even see that it is running. In fact, their most focal table is one that is the least used! This will be addressed in the management section.

From an aesthetic point of view, this is a very
nice and comfortable poker venue. The tables, light fixtures, color palette, general layout and organization make this a very nice room, but certainly distanced significantly from comparable local’s venues like Stations casinos and M. Silverton choose not to install autoshufflers in all tables. Despite the lack of fitting all tables with shufflers, the room is fitted with tableside card swipe units and offers electronic list tracking, which pits it technologically superior to its closest competitor, South Point, though South Point wins overall due to its exponentially more significant action.

Overall, the poker room at Silverton is easily one of the most attractive small rooms in the city, but suffers from a lack of consistent action. Though the room is comfortable, aesthetically appealing, properly laid out and located perfectly, it has a very limited customer base and rarely gets more than 2 cash games at any given time, which is unfortunate, but does not adversely affect the rating. The investment in technology and well thought out positioning demonstrates that the lodge believes in poker and thus deservedly earns a 4/5 rating for general room quality.

Competition Rating: 2
Due to the Silverton’s main game being 3/6LHE which mainly filled with daily players, the game is consistently soft and rather sociable. Silverton is a local’s casino that tends to lose quite a bit of its poker market share to both the Strip and local competitors like South Point and M. Due to this, players that make Silverton their home are often either of the casual/recreational low limit variety or tournament players that are there to have fun and gamble with a set amount of money. The hotel attracts a certain budget minded crowd, outdoor enthusiast, and truckers, thus the tournaments and cash games are often an eclectic mix of all groups.

When a NL game starts (which is not a daily occurrence) the game can be quite good, despite mainly being comprised of daily regulars and tournament players. The NL game tends toward the tight passive variety, which is about as expected, though it can loosen up considerably late at night, usually due to some off-duty casino workers that stop by to splash around their days tokes.

The biggest drawback to the Silverton is the lack of consistent action, by far. Though the room is well apportioned, comfortable, and offers a nice layout, it rarely gets more than a single cash game, and often only has two tables for its fast paced tournament. The players that do play at Silverton are regulars as most hotel guests choose to go to the Strip to play.

Overall, the competition level here is average. Because the vast majority of the players are locals often of the daily playing variety, the games tend to be sociable, loose passive, and typical of any standard locals casino.

Dealer Rating: 3
The dealers at Silverton have come a long way since the room’s original opening in 2005, but are still only average to slightly below average. In 2005, this room had quite possibly some of the weakest dealers in the city. Fortunately, times have changed, and it appears that either those dealers have either moved on or gotten a lot better at their jobs.

On the good side, the dealing staff is friendly, receptive to courtesy, and thanked all players, usually by name. They controlled the game well, though a few were a bit too quiet at the table and sort of let the table run itself (while still keeping fairly good attention to action and pending bets, etc). Mechanically, this reviewer did not spot any major mistakes or misdeals from three separate dealers in the same night, which fares better than a lot of rooms. However, side pot calculation spears to be a major problem, both in the tournament and in the cash game. This may be isolated to only 1 or 2 specific dealers, but is something that definitely needs to be addressed. In addition to this, some basic dealing protocol is not being followed, which leads to the overall dealing score to drop. These things include rolling the deck, lazy pitch, and 1/10 seat card placement instead of pitching. Generally, these types of dealing shortcuts are found in older dealers, not in the younger greener dealers, but it is still a problem worth mentioning.

Overall, the dealing staff at Silverton is slightly below average, which is a vast improvement from 2005. Over time, the staff can hopefully improve upon this score by cleaning up some minor dealer idiosyncrasies that some do consistently.

Cocktail Rating: 3
The cocktail service seems to have dropped off a bit since the poker room’s old location, possibly due to the lack of a close service bar. The girls were very friendly and the orders were done correctly, but the time between rounds was a bit on the excessive side. The floorman was open to actually leaving the room to find the waitress, though, which was appreciated by the players.

It seems that the drink selection is about average when compared to a small Strip room, but is quite more limited than the selection offered at the nearby competition South Point. Red Bull was not available, and at least one specialty shot was also not served. Local’s casino’s need to offer things like better than average cocktail speed, value, and selection in order to remain competitive, and it seems that with regards to cocktailing, Silverton sort of tapers off. The speed is the largest detriment to the cocktail rating, as the friendliness and attractiveness of the servers is above average.

Management Rating: 3
The poker room management at the Silverton is just slightly above average. When assessing the whole picture, it seems that the management tends to be weak in certain room level decisions, but strong in high level decision making. Though the senior management appears to invest appropriately in poker, appointing the room with comfortable furnishings, autoshufflers, and the Genesis Bravo tableside tracking units, the floor management is a little too lackluster in its protocol and decision making. Some floor decisions are a bit too casual in their rendering, and appear to come from people that are not completely acclimated to all aspects of the game. Also, odd protocol directives like tournament dealers that keep the well locked up on the table and play out of temp plastic trays shows a true lack of professionalism and even goes so far as to “cheapen” the room. Compounding this problem is the fact that the room shuts down and closes when the last game breaks, and then reopens in the morning. Not staffing a room 24/7 does not help word of mouth and though it of course saves on personnel, it costs the room revenue in long term customer satisfaction.

Though personable and welcoming to new players, the floor experienced by this reviewer did not seem to be well educated in game placement and visual game support. To further explain, this room is built with a half wall rail on one side of the room that enables walk-by players entering the casino from the parking garage to view the action from the rail. This is an ample opportunity to provide the visual stimulation for the impulse players to get into the game (an impulse player being someone who did not go to the casino to play cards, but may upon entry). Yet, the floor chooses to assign tournaments and games to run alongside the back wall and away from the rail. In fact, the most focal table in the room is the one that is the least used (and lacks an autoshuffler). This is a poor decision for a room that is already struggling with getting consistent action.

Improper game placement comes into play again when they manage to get a NLHE game off the ground. This game is often placed on the back table in the corner that is not visible from the rail at all. This is the worst way to protect your game. When prompted as to why the NL game would be placed in a back corner, the response of the floor was “NL players don’t want to be bothered”. This is an interesting argument, but is faulty on a few levels. Firstly, the game in question is 1/2NLHE, not 300/600. Furthermore, even Bobby’s Room at Bellagio is in the center of the room with glass windows all around it for a reason. It encourages players to watch and join the game, which in turn makes the game better. By shielding the game from the public, the public will not play. It actually hurts the game instead of helping it.

When the Silverton first opened its poker room in 2005, it was a consistently busy room. It appears that things have severely tapered off over the years with people moving on and playing elsewhere for a variety of reasons. The fact that Silverton failed to remain competitive more than likely falls directly on the shoulders of the management, since competitor locals casinos are still quite busy when the Silverton struggles to get a second game off the ground most nights. One complaint from a few years ago was regarding the elevated priority of tournaments over cash games. This is another poor decision that could have affected the lack of long term success.

Overall, the management of the Silverton is average. Some good points (friendly, modern technology, nicely apportioned) and some bad points (improper game placement, lackluster protocol) earn the average rating.

Comps Rating: 3
The Silverton offers a rather generic comp menu, with the standard fare, and little in the way of new enticing promotions. The room offers the standard $1 per hour on the Silverton players’ card, which is tracked electronically. Also, the room offers standard high hand jackpots, and one unique promotion to encourage the first game of the day to start: The first 10 players to buy in for $100 to the 3/6LHE game will get an extra stack of chips. The problem with this promotion is that it is limited to the first 10 players, so it guarantees to not start more than one game, and it is basically the same players every day.

The hourly comps coupled with the high hand jackpots rates this room below its local competitors that offer such things has mega jackpots, freerolls, and above average comps. Also, competitor promotions cater toward all players in order to get multiple games running, whereas the Silverton appears content to run a single 3/6 game and a 2 or 3 table tournament every day.

Overall, the comps that the Silverton offers are below average within the locals’ poker room market, but average when compared to rooms overall. The room could really use a fresh look at their promotions menu and room organization to attempt to regain the market share that they once had, but have since lost to competing rooms.
