Editor's Review - Luxor Poker Room Total Rating: 2.30 Room Quality Rating: 2 **Last Updated: 11/20/09** The poker room at the Luxor is one of the longer standing poker rooms in the city, with the property operating a card room continuously since the resorts opening in 1993. Offering 8 tables, the room is quite busy most of the time, despite being a rather small “area” (rather than an actual “room”). The room is back to its original location, adjacent to the walkway to Excalibur. The room has a large management podium in the front, and the room is surrounded by several televisions. The tables themselves are rather worn and the chairs are less than ideal (older style non swivel adjustable). Aesthetically, the Luxor poker room is quite bland and lacks any real poker driven atmosphere. Though it lines a frequently traveled walkway, it is rather far from the sports book, and relies on walk by traffic in order to get players. The chairs are below average, typical non swivel/non adjustable height variety, and of the 8 tables that the room utilizes; only 3 have autoshufflers. Overall, the room is simply a below average room, on nearly all levels. It is obvious that little was invested in maintaining the room on an aesthetical level, and the room, in its current incarnation, seems to have been thrown together rather haphazardly, with little attention paid to the details of setting up a proper room. With the exception of the 3 autoshufflers that are in use, this room lacks any and all modern poker room technology. The room does not utilize electronic waitlists or Genesis Bravo player card tracking, nor does the room offer any additional amenities such as tableside foodservice, massages, or hourly comps on the players’ card. The poker room phone number connects to an automated system that seems to have not been updated in several years, as it mentions games and promotions that have long since been discontinued. This shows a true lack of concern for the room’s maintenance and outwardly demonstrates the Luxor management’s non-commitment to providing a properly maintained poker venue to its customers. Overall, the Luxor poker room is a real disappointment, on nearly all room quality levels. The highest selling point of the room with regards to room quality is the fact that the restrooms are close by. The tables are worn, the chairs are substandard, only 3 tables out of 8 have autoshufflers. Taking all these quality issues into consideration, the Luxor poker room is easily one of the lowest quality poker venues in all of Las Vegas. Competition Rating: 4 The Luxor poker room offers 1/2NLHE and occasionally 2/4LHE. These games are often quite soft, and are generally comprised of several tourists with a few locals mixed in. As the room dropped its weekly freeroll promotions and now relies only on its high hand of the hour promotions, the large local base that it once had have generally moved on to other venues, making the games softer overall. The Luxor used to spread a $50 min/max NL game, but that game was discontinued long ago. The current game has a $50 min and $200 max, with the ability to add on another $200 once your stack falls below $200 (i.e. you can tip the dealer when you sit down with $200 and get another $200 instantly if you are so inclined). This is an odd rule, and is rarely utilized by the players. Overall, the competition of the Luxor poker room is one of the only real selling points of the room, as the players are generally bad the vast majority of the time (even during the weekdays). Whether playing NL or LHE, the games are often soft and the stacks are usually short. This is a good room to learn the game as many players are often buying in very short and are new to the game. Due to the simple longevity of the Luxor poker room, the room has a fairly strong local base that are still there despite the popular freeroll promotion’s discontinuance a few years back. These regulars are easy to spot and play very predictably, usually trying to chase the various promotions that the room is always running. Due to this minor base, the overall competition scores at 4 out of 5. Dealer Rating: 2 The dealing staff at the Luxor is yet another weak link on the Luxor poker room chain. The staff seems to be a mix of younger dealers with attitudes and older dealers who don’t care. It is apparent that many of these dealers have been at the Luxor a long time, and perhaps due to this fact proper dealing protocol seems to have been softened greatly over the years due to many simply being “set in their ways”. It is rather common to see dealers complaining publicly about various management decisions and scheduling in plain view and hearing range of the patrons. It is also a frequent occurrence to see commonly accepted procedures and protocols tossed out due to what can only be explained as sheer laziness: rolling the deck, matching stacks after an all-in win, watching televisions instead of paying attention to the action, mixing the muck and the stub immediately after the last card is boarded, etc. These are dealer idiosyncrasies that are common in dealers that have simply lost the passion for the game and their jobs. I have witnessed more rolled eyes, snappy answers, and lack of interest for conversations from the dealing staff here then from nearly all other properties combined. When a dealer makes a mistake, and is corrected by a player in the game, more often than not, the staff responds very negatively and with an attitude. Of course, there are always exceptions. There are a few dealers at the Luxor that do their job well, welcome new and established players, and maintain good solid game control. Unfortunately, these good apples are the minority in the bunch. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service at the Luxor poker room is very average, in nearly all regards. Red Bull is not served (Sobe is available, however), and basic name brand liquor is available. The cocktail servers are union, and are thus generally older than one might expect. The service speed is average, and the drink quality is on par with other comparable resorts. Overall, the cocktail service is exactly what you would expect from a poker room at the Luxor. The drinks are served about every 20 minutes or so, depending on the shift, and the attitudes and service of the girls are positive and welcoming. Management Rating: 1 The Luxor poker room is managed on a very subpar level. This is evident from the lack of any sort of investment in technology, aesthetics, new promotions, or even a welcoming and friendly front staff. On every singly occasion that this reviewer has entered the Luxor poker room, he has been snubbed in one way or another by the shift supervisor, the floor staff/brushes, or the up-dealers. This is usually done at the management podium where players can stand for several minutes before even getting a greeting from the people behind the desk, who often seem overworked and annoyed. As mentioned previously, the room seems to be rather haphazardly thrown together with little care or concern for room aesthetics or amenities. For an extremely long time (over 2 years), the Luxor poker room operated without a poker room manager, and thus little was done to upkeep or maintain the room. This shows upper management’s lack of commitment to poker. On the room level, the floor staff seems to have all developed gruff and jaded attitudes with a certain lackadaisical charm that some players actually find humorous and enjoyable. Luxor offers various promotions that seem to change rather frequently (including $50 for Aces Cracked). To pay for these promotions, the room is the only one in all of Las Vegas to drop $2 for the jackpot. The first dollar is dropped on $10, and the second is dropped on $60. The rooms rake is 10%/$4 max plus $2 jackpot, which is the highest of any MGM Mirage property. To close this section, a particular incident is worth mentioning. A while back, a patron was cashing out at the front desk, and asked about purchasing a $4 chip for his chip collection (the Luxor uses special $4 chips for rake). The cashier (who also appeared to be the shift supervisor at the time) was extremely rude and abrupt in her response. Her exact words to the patron: “They are for the rake not for customers. If I give you one, I will be fired. Do you want me to get fired?” The poor guy immediately started apologizing profusely. I was next in line to purchase chips and get into a game, and was simply in shock. The policy is understandable and not the issue. It wasn’t what she did by refusing to sell him the chip. It was the way she did it. Overall, the management at the Luxor is yet another weak link of the room, and shows a true lack of the resorts commitment to poker. Comps Rating: 2 As of November 2009, the Luxor poker room offers very little with regards to comps for players. The room does not offer hourly comps on the MGM Mirage players’ card. A food coupon for $5 is given upon request to players who play 4-5 hours in the room. The room runs various high hand promotions and pays $50 for Aces cracked, all of which are funded by the $2 jackpot drop. The high hand promotions is tracked on a white dry erase board. Overall, the comp program of giving out a $5 coupon is extremely antiquated and is in dying need of a modern update, much like the entire room itself.
