Poker Room Rate: Yes Daily Room Rates: $129 (Sunday -Thursday) $199 (Friday & Saturday) Daily Play Requirement: 6 hours Editor's Review - Wynn Poker Room Total Rating: 4.30 Room Quality Rating: 5 **Last Updated: 08/23/08** The Wynn Poker Room grand opened along with the resort on April 28th, 2005. Much like the resort in general, Wynn spared no expense in creating a luxurious poker room that caters to serious players and visitors alike that want to play in a luxurious yet serious poker atmosphere, and aren’t intimidated by large amounts of cash in play ($100 bills play on all games, and all NL games have no max buy in). The room aesthetics are quite rich and understated, once again matching the resort as a whole. The color palate is dark browns, with hints of red, tan, and khaki. The chairs are easily the most comfortable poker chairs in Vegas, adjustable height, wheels, high backs, and soft cushions (cloth covered). The dark wood veneers throughout the room are complimented by bronze rail accents, think tasseled drapery, and vibrant carpeting. Even the cage is elegantly adorned with poker themed vintage artwork, which also lines the walls of the room in general. The oversized poker card paintings are reminiscent to the Bellagio prior to the remodel (another Wynn designed resort). The Wynn takes it a step further by offering poker themed sculptures on the sideboards that align the walls, as well as vintage gunmetal phones for customers to call in house or to make complimentary local phone calls. Also, there are several flat screen televisions located throughout the room for sports viewing. The Wynn poker room is well setup, with the only major complaint being the lack of a proper waiting area. The central podium/desk has two computers for the list managers to sign up players, and there are three large plasma screens dedicated to the lists only, two above the main podium and the other by the main entrance to the Top Section (also with its own podium), where 5/10NL and above games are spread. The layout of the Wynn Poker Room is quite impressive. Instead of having one large room with tables like most poker rooms in Las Vegas, the Wynn has several walls throughout the room dividing the room into smaller subsections, allowing for a more intimate setting no matter which section you are in. Also, the Top Section is elevated and is lined with a half rail of bronze and wood rails, along with drapery, to better separate that section of the room. Also the self parking at the Wynn is easily the most convenient in town, even topping the local Stations room. The self parking garage is only about 100 feet from the poker room. If you are able to park on the casino level, you could essentially be in the poker room within 1 minute of parking. The technology of the Wynn poker room is competitive with that of the other larger rooms (Venetian, Bellagio, Caesars), but falls short of rooms like Hard Rock and MGM Grand where on table player tracking is available. Also, player’s cards cannot be generated for the customer in the room itself. The player must go to the Red Card booth to get a players card, and will earn comps by checking in and checking out at the podium. The comfort of the room is better than most rooms, but still includes some minor flaws. There are a couple tables where the customers in certain seats are most certainly trapped in a corner. A few tables in the center of the room do have back to back chairs that sometimes cause a little more chair bumping then needed. These are minor complaints, though, and overall the Wynn Poker Room is truly a world class poker room, and is easily one of the Las Vegas’ Top 4 Poker Venues. Competition Rating: 2 The competition of the Wynn poker room is generally pretty tough, even at the 4/8LHE and 1/3NLHE level. The 4/8LHE game (which is the lowest limit the Wynn offers) often has a strong mix of daily local regulars as well as Wynn hotel guests. The NL games are all uncapped, which gives a significant advantage to better players who can put a large amount of money in play, and bully as necessary. The 1/3NL game (smallest NL game offered) uses $3 chips which often confuses novice players that are used to using red $5 chips. The 2/5 and 5/10 NL games are often filled with daily grinders, but often the games are still quite loose. When the games are tight (thus boring) there are usually two or three or more other games to choose from, and the staff is open to table changes. Some players complain that the uncapped buy in often leads to boring games (especially preflop) where an oversized raise will simply take the blinds, but this reviewer has noticed that this is not a regular occurrence, and often the games at the Wynn, though usually deeper than most generic NL games in Vegas, are quite good games, and worth sitting in and waiting for a good hand to get properly paid off in a large pot. Dealer Rating: 5 The Wynn Poker Room dealing staff is the best the city has to offer. All Wynn dealers are experienced, often several years (in some cases decades) of poker dealing experience. One dealer in particular, Jodi, is one of the quickest dealers I have ever come across. The flop manages to just appear once the preflop betting is complete. It is like a “pop” and the board appears like magic. It is something to see. It is obvious that the Wynn recruited some of the best dealers in the city to its card room when they were hiring. Many of the best dealers from neighboring properties were brought over when the Wynn opened, and this is obvious once you start playing there. Bar none, the Wynn dealing staff is hands down the best in the city when it comes to mechanical skill, game control, and experience. The personalities of the Wynn dealers doesn’t come out as often, as it seems that the Wynn dealers have all been instructed to generally keep quiet at the table simply “dummy up and deal.” This fits the general serious nature of the Wynn poker room in general, though there are a few dealers that come alive in the box (especially when dealing the smaller games, and the table is a loud/fun table). The Wynn dealers seem to adapt to their tables quite well in this regard, and solidly earn a best of the best 5 rating. Cocktail Rating: 5 The Wynn Poker Room cocktail service, along with Venetian, is in a class all by itself. The only thing that Venetian has over the Wynn in this department is complimentary Fiji water. Other than that, the Wynn cocktail service is one of the best in town. All top shelf liquor is available (with the exception of locked cabinet reserves like Blue Label and Louis XIII), and is served by a cocktail staff that appears to have walked off the fashion show runway. All are young and beautiful and wearing attractive, yet elegant uniforms. The speed of the cocktails is generally pretty quick, as there are often two girls working the room at any given time. Also, Red Bull is served in the can, and is complimentary. The Wynn cocktail service is truly a model for the industry, and one that all rooms should strive to emulate. Management Rating: 4 The Wynn Poker Room management was obviously selected from various rooms around the country. The staff is quite customer friendly, and are all quite knowledgeable about the games spread, and can render decisions effectively. There are a few reasons, though, why the management of the Wynn could use some improvement. The propensity of the HR team is to hire less then experienced temp floor staff during major Wynn tournaments. Decisions by these individuals are at times questionable, and lacking in proper poker knowledge. Also, I am including the podium staff in this management section. The podium staff is often a little more gruff then they need to be, and are often so busy that they sometimes neglect or accidentally ignore customers standing right in front of them. The management of the Wynn is extremely gracious to its regular customers, regardless of the limit game being played by said customer (in contrast to Bellagio, where higher limit customers often receive superior customer service compared to the less then stellar service given to lower limit players). The regulars at the Wynn receive some benefits that occasional or tourist players may never get to see. Of course, tipping the floors goes a long way toward building a relationship with the staff, as it does in any Las Vegas Poker room. The list management system at the Wynn is consistent with what you would expect from a World Class Poker Room. It is all electronic, and can be viewed from the hotel room screens. The announcing of open seats, coupled with the inability to announce over the PA in the casino, leave a little to be desired, though, as players often miss their name being called unless they are nearby the room itself. Comps Rating: 4 The Wynn awards its players with a $1 per hour comp which, upon request, goes directly onto their Red Card Wynn Players’ Card. Players must sign in and out at the desk or have the chip runner take care of it. The comps earned can be used at specific restaurants only, and the restaurant must be named when you are requesting the comp. The food comps earned can be redeemed at the coffee shop (Terrance Point Café) Zoozacrackers (the Deli), the coffee bar (the café), and the Buffet. The Wynn does not offer high hand jackpots or bad jackpots, as is signature to World Class rooms in Las Vegas (Bellagio, Venetian, and MGM Grand do not offer these types of jackpots either). This is further proof that the Wynn is catering itself to the serious poker player much more so then the casual budget minded Vegas visitor. The Wynn offers a very competitive poker room rate, which requires 6 hours of play to earn a often significantly reduced hotel room rate. Players now swipe their card at the table to track comps and hours. Open seats are also now tracked electronically. Wynn to host $50K April Freeroll Series Date: 03/12/09 Summary:The Wynn poker room will be offering a freeroll a week every week in April. Players can qualify with as little as 12 hours of live play. The freerolls are HOUSE FUNDED and total 50K! Wynn poker room has added CAPS to its 1/3 and 2/5 NL games!
