Editor's Review - Sunset Station Poker Room
Total Rating: 3.65
Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 12/30/08**
The Sunset Station poker room is, in nearly all respects, the most stereotypical Stations poker room that there is in Las Vegas. Reminisce of the days before Green Valley Ranch and Red Rock, when Station’s poker was a bastion of low brow limit Hold’em games and a dedicated daily group of retired grinders and blue haired biddies enjoying the doughnuts in the morning, and the chuck wagon buffet at night. This sort of crowd defines the Sunset station poker room during the dayshift hours, and the room is setup to accommodate said crowd with little hesitation.
The room itself is easy to find, navigate through, and make yourself comfortable in; though convenient parking is not readily available with relation to the poker room’s location. Encompassing an enclosed room, with half walls and pillars surrounding the tables, and televisions mounted throughout, this room is a traditional, albeit old fashioned, poker venue. The chairs were recently updated, and are adjustable height swivel chairs. The tables are traditional Stations fare, replete with autoshufflers and cup holders. Side tables are available as well as a self service list kiosk enabling patrons to sign up for games through the swiping of their Boarding Pass players’ cards.
Aesthetically, the room is rather sterile, with the color contrasts simply being white and dark red and light accents of yellow. This traditional and basic poker setup is welcomed by the regulars that often choose Sunset as their venue of choice simply because it is the closest room to their house.
Overall, the room quality of the Sunset poker room exceeds the expectation of this reviewer. The intimacy of the room coupled with the comfortable setup of the tables make the Sunset poker room one of the higher quality small locals’ rooms. By simply sticking to the basics and not deviating far from classic poker room traditions, Sunset offers an above average quality room to its dedicated group of loyal customers.
Competition Rating: 3
As expected, this room caters almost exclusively to locals that live close by and play daily. This is especially true in the Limit Hold’em games, which offer half price blinds and a dedicated group of daily players. The NL game spreads daily usually on 2 tables, and has a rotating group of regulars and even a decent number of out of towners driving through Vegas on their way to other destinations.
The NL game had some decent action the few times that this reviewer played in the room. A few loose regulars mixed with the standard weak tight players that full most of the Stations rooms in Las Vegas. The Hold’em games vary by the limit. The 2/4 game tends to be older women and men socializing and chatting with cards being secondary. The 4/8LHE game is standard Stations fare, and has some cowboys and other older locals. Sunset also gets a 3/6 Omaha 8 game on occasion, spreading almost exclusively on dayshift, and filled with traditional Omaha players.
Generally, the clientele of the Sunset Station poker room is comprised of older locals from the Southeast Henderson area and a few younger hotshots that think they have the whole game easily figured out.
Dealer Rating: 3
The dealers at Sunset Station are all competent, older, and experienced. None are break-in dealers fresh out of dealer school.
Sunset Station has had a poker room since they opened in June 1997, and a few of their poker dealers have been there ever since opening day. Some dealers’ mechanical skills are a little on the soft side, and the pitch from a few others could use some work, but overall, the dealing staff seem to get their jobs done well, and all seem to get along well with the daily regulars.
A few dealers seem to be a little too chatty while in the box, thus losing some game control and missing some action, but this is a very small minority. The larger issue is the casual nature that some dealers have become with basic proper dealing protocol with regards to laying the board cards, pitch, and physical pot control.
Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktail service at the Sunset Station poker room is on par with most Stations properties.
The girls are quick, will bring more than one drink upon request, and the drinks are made well.
The waitresses are generally attractive, though many have been at Sunset quite a long time. No premium drinks are available, and Red Bull is not served, but most other mixed drinks and a variety of standard beers are available.
Management Rating: 3
As with all Stations rooms, the Sunset Station poker room utilizes the Bravo system, which tracks players’ comps at the table, and the list management system is electronic, with the board on the screen above the management podium. Also, there is a self service kiosk located outside of the poker room which enables players to get on the list without interacting with anyone, and simply wait to be called. The system also tracks special promotions (such as freeroll hours) and enables players to see how far along they are in qualifying for the various promotions that Stations runs.
Though the room is managed well on a big picture level, the people that are there running the room can tend to be a little unwelcoming to new players and even tend to lean toward the gruff side. This does vary from person to person, but this reviewer has noticed a few times when players were given the brush off when asking specific questions about games and how to play (specifically tourists that had never played before).
Overall, the room management seems to be average within the industry. The customer service could use some work, but other than that, the room seems to be managed well and the players seem to enjoy the way the staff and upper management maintain and run the room.
Comps Rating: 4
Sunset Station follows the same comp system that the rest of the Station’s group follows. Players earn $1 per hour, and the comp goes directly onto the players’ card. The comp dollars can be redeemed at any Stations property for food and beverage, as well as in the gift shop and at Kids Quest. Currently, triple comps ($3 per hour) are awarded during the 3AM to 9AM timeframe.
Stations Casinos do not offer high hand jackpots for quads or straight flushes, but they do pay $250 for Royal Flushes in Hold’em. They offer two Bad Beat jackpots; one is a joint property promotion, where everyone who is playing in every Stations poker room received a players share when it hits. It is usually Quads beaten. They also offer a 10K property Bad Beat jackpot which is usually Aces full of 10s beaten. The property jackpot is paid to the table only.
Overall, the Sunset Station comp program rates as above average simply because it is part of the Stations combined comp system, which enables comps to be accumulated and used at any Stations property.
