Editor's Review - Rio Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.10

Room Quality Rating: 2
The Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino is the current home to the world’s most prestigious poker tournament series, The World Series of Poker. The WSOP has been at the Rio since 2005, with the events taking place in the expansive banquet halls; specifically the Amazon Room. The rest of the year, however, the Rio offers an intimate 10 table poker room which spreads a daily 1/3 No Limit Hold’em game, and an occasional 3/6 Limit Hold’em Game. Being home to the aforementioned most prestigious poker tournament in the world, one has high expectations for the property’s poker room effort. After all, ESPN advertises poker at the Rio every single time the WSOP airs (which is often several times a day over several different ESPN channels). Harrah’s Entertainment owns this exceptional product, thus quality of the Rio’s all-year poker room effort must be designed to be the best of the best, right? At the very minimum, it should at least be able to trump the lesser HET properties like Flamingo and Bally’s, right? Unfortunately, neither is the case.

The Rio poker room is an absolute embarrassment to the World Series of Poker, and the poker world in general. The decision makers that allowed what could have been a phenomenal poker venue fall into such dilapidation and disrepair should literally be ashamed. The mere fact that this room is even somewhat affiliated with the WSOP, let alone the physical HOME to the world’s most prestigious poker tournament, is sad on a multitude of levels.

When critiquing any poker venue, several items must be taken into consideration to properly, and fairly, review the room quality. Furniture quality, janitorial upkeep, layout, chair quality, felt quality, table upkeep, television placement, carpet quality, technology, location, aesthetics, and even dealer uniforms are all taken into consideration. The Home of the WSOP falls short on nearly all these factors. Allow me to enumerate them below:

Furniture Quality: The first word that popped into this reviewer’s mind when he walked into the Rio poker room was “Dilapidated.” The furnishings here are simply run down, and at this point, shoddy. The dealers’ chairs are something out of the 1970s, and the plastic plant in the corner has certainly seen better days. To look at the room, one would think that it was thrown together with remnants from various other poker rooms around town. Chairs are mismatched at every table, and seat cushions are worn out and need to be replaced. Overall, low quality, run down furnishings dominate this room.

Janitorial Upkeep: This reviewer was pleased to see the floor staff and the night maintenance crew picking up trash and brushing/dusting the tables. This does not appear to be a problem for the room.

Layout: The room’s layout is satisfactory. The tables are spaced out appropriately, with the 5 tables that have autoshufflers placed near the front entrance (of course, the home of the WSOP should be reasonably expected to have autoshufflers in all tables, but that will be addressed in the management section). For some reason, there is a back table that site behind a half wall (at one time, the management desk was back there). It looks as though it is designed to be used for tournament final tables, but it appears more than anything to be a place for dealers to drop their things while accessing their lockers, which are directly adjacent to the table as well.

Chair Quality: The chairs at the Rio poker room are the worst in the city. Plastic vinyl chairs, lacking wheels or adjustable anything, many of which are threadbare and offering little to no comfort whatsoever to the players.

Felt Quality: The felts appear to have been recently updated. Felts are clean and do not show signs of wear.

Table Upkeep: The tables are quite old, by the looks of the design and the undercarriage. The padded arm rails show extreme signs of wear, including cracks, holes, threadbare corners, and jagged cracked leather lines.

Television Placement: There are a few flat screen televisions mounted throughout the room, but this is certainly not the best rooms for sports viewing, as the TVs are quite spaced out and not viewable to all parties.

Carpet Quality: The carpeting was replaced recently and do not show any major signs of disrepair.

Technology: The room has the Genesis Bravo tableside units installed in the tables for player card tracking, but is unable to utilize the system yet. The room does use electronic list tracking, but due to the lack of the tableside units to swipe players’ cards, the room chooses to retain the cards at the desk while the players are playing. This can result in cards being forgotten and discarded on a daily basis.

Location: The room’s location is pretty solid. It is located a short walk from a parking lot, though a decent trek from the valet and parking garages. The restroom’s location is quite convenient, as are the buffet and other restaurants.

Aesthetics: The room is quite basic in its aesthetical design, focusing on little more than the bare bones practicality of offering poker as a game for its patrons to play. There is a large banner sign on the back wall of the room that advertises several games that the room rarely spreads (if ever), and the rules for the promotions are printed on white pieces of paper and TAPED on the side wall (this is along the lines of something expected from mom and pop backroom games, not a professional card room).

Dealer Uniforms: This is one aspect that falls far below expectations. The dealer uniforms are lacking any sort of professionalism or class. Basic black golf shirts with the WSOP logo are the norm here, which lend themselves to a certain frumpy look that have no place at the home of the WSOP. Print advertising displayed throughout the property show a professionally dressed dealer wearing the signature WSOP white shirt and vests, yet that is nowhere near the case here.

The room quality of the Rio poker room is well below average and far cry from the glamorous reputation that the room gets due to its WSOP affiliation. This room earns a pathetic 2/5. Not since the Luxor has a poker room received such a low rating in regards to room quality. Overall, the Rio poker room is one of the lowest quality poker rooms in Las Vegas, and a true disappointment on nearly all levels.

What is most shocking is the fact that the Rio is the ONLY poker room in the WORLD that gets UNLIMITED free advertising every single day on ESPN, video games, YouTube videos, etc, and yet it appears that none of said publicity is even remotely capitalized on. Players expecting a true WSOP quality experienced are leaving sorely disappointed and often bitter. By allowing the room to fall into such dilapidation, the Rio decision makers are denying themselves the very customer base that they are presumably dedicating their most vital resources to achieve.

Competition Rating: 3
The competition level of the Rio poker room varies greatly by shift, much more so then comparable small rooms. This is largely due to their popular 3 course promotion, which includes 3 weekly freerolls, and a few other small benefits to playing on dayshift.

In the morning, the room is extremely nitty and rocky. Older bonus chasing players dominate the room, complain about nearly everything, and bring books to read at the table. This reviewer did not think it was possible to find a rockier crowd than the one that plays at Harrah’s every morning, until now. Bring an iPod, and snicker at the way the regulars overplay big pairs, and you should be fine.

In the late afternoon/evening, the crowd balanced out, and the games become significantly better, with more and more straddles, loose aggressive raises, and other aspects that make the games great.

On graveyard, all bets are off, and games become loose and wild. Though there a few intelligent and knowledgeable players, they make themselves known rather quickly (at least one will play his PSP or DS throughout the entire session). After observing the table for a decent period of time, any reasonably smart player will know exactly who to get involved with and who to avoid.

One interesting aspect with regards to competition is how the 1/3 NLHE game is structured. The Rio poker room allows button straddles, which take precedence over UTG straddles. When the button opts to straddle, action starts with the small blind. This is a unique aspect that I would like to see more rooms employ, as it adds significant action to the game. Also, the room allows cash to play ($100 bills only) on all games. Though many tend to not like this (mainly due to the ability for players to sneak on additional cash to the game, despite there being a $300 max rule), this reviewer likes having cash play. It adds a psychological aspect to the game, and can save players from having excessive chips or easily lost hi-denomination checks. Of course, it requires that dealers be able to properly handle paper on the table, and fortunately, the Rio dealers are all acclimated to such protocol.

Overall, the competition level of the Rio is not really a selling point of the room, but not necessarily a major criticism either. Much like all rooms, the level of play varies greatly by shift and whether or not one is playing during the promotional time periods or not. When taking into account all shifts, the Rio poker room is a fair choice when seeking out a soft game.

Dealer Rating: 5
The dealers at the Rio are truly a saving grace for the room. Every single dealer that this reviewer experienced was competent, friendly, welcoming, and possessed strong game control. Mechanically, not a single common error was noted, and the pitch was near perfect from everyone. In fact, mechanically, the Rio dealers are all superior to nearly all comparable rooms and deserve to be placed in the same league as the best of the best (along the lines of the dealers at the Wynn, Venetian, and Bellagio).

All dealers at the Rio personify professionalism and properly emulate the prestigious nature that the WSOP represents. This is in addition to the fact that all of Rio’s dealers are educated in ALL GAMES. One of the largest problems with modern dealers is that too many are HOLD’EM dealers, and not necessarily POKER dealers. To call oneself a poker dealer, one must be able to properly deal all known games (Omaha (pot limit and limit), Draw, Stud, etc). The Rio dealers are all properly trained to handle said games and do so with utmost professionalism and knowledge.

Because the Rio allows cash to play in all games, the dealers must be properly trained in cash protocol, and fortunately, such is the case here. Dealers were able to handle on the piece transactions, change, and multiple cash involved side pots with flair and accuracy.

Overall, the dealing staff at the Rio poker room is outstanding, and elevates the overall status of the room.

Cocktail Rating: 4
The cocktail servers at the Rio are beautiful, energetic, and serve all patrons with a genuine smile. Also, they occasionally jump on a mini-stage and dance to various songs. Though there were, at times, a significant delay in bringing the drinks to the patrons, this was more than likely due to the late hour in which this reviewer was playing on his most recent session. During the Swing and dayshift, the cocktail servers tend to be pretty quick, and personify good cocktailing.

The quality of the drinks served at the Rio poker room is quite high, and a respectable number of brand name liquors and beers are available. Also, Red Bull is available, and is served in the can. Unlike the true Harrah’s Entertainment flagship property, Caesars Palace, the Rio does not limit poker players to well drinks only.

Overall, the cocktail service at the Rio poker room is well above average, and is a true selling point of the room.

Management Rating: 2
To rate the Management of the Rio poker room, several different things need to be considered. This section will address the positive aspects of management (floor men, want for new technology, room level competence) and the negative aspects (allowing room to fall into disrepair, lack of functioning technology, lack of open communication with media sites).

On the positive side, the personnel that are on staff to render games decisions and run the room all seem thoroughly competent, knowledgeable, and friendly (referring specifically to Ned and Jeremy on grave, and Mike on dayshift). Though there was one other dayshift floor person that seemed flustered and not very welcoming to the cash game players, for the most part, all were appreciative of the business, and willing to satisfy all customers as best they could (including coordinating a food order for a patron at a very late hour). The hands on room level management that this reviewer experienced were truly positive aspects of the room, and if this section was based solely on this human element, than the room would receive a 5/5.

Another positive aspect is the fact that the room management is making a solid effort to build a customer base for the room by offering a quite aggressive promotions menu that single-handedly elevates this rooms overall management rating. The room currently offers a special 3AM to 3PM promotion that includes a reduced rake, $3 per hour comps, and a $100 drawing every 3 hours. Plus, the room is offering 3 freerolls a week. This is a phenomenal promotion, and strong kudos are extended to the management for coming up with this generous promotion.

Moving on to the negatives, the decision makers (i.e. upper management) seem to have truly given up on this room (at least that’s the way it appears to those that walk into the venue), and are not making any solid efforts to take advantage of the massive publicity that hosting the WSOP affords the room. The room has into multiple levels of disrepair, and is lacking proper maintenance. From what this reviewer has overheard the Rio poker room appears, on paper, to be a phenomenally successful room as the 10 table poker room gets credit for all cash side game revenue that the WSOP brings in (i.e. the drop from the cash game tables in the Amazon room artificially pumps up the numbers of the year round poker room); thus requiring little to no effort to make the room appear successful. Whether or not this is factually accurate is undetermined at this time, but certainly appears to be the case. Why else would one allow your most publicized poker room become nothing more than a lackluster venue blending in with other mediocre rooms, but with fewer amenities?

Looking past the aesthetical dilapidation that the room has succumbed to, certain management decisions are simply suspect. It seems that the sentiment of many of the employees of the room that the games and the action was significantly more plentiful when the room spread exclusively 2/5NLHE and 4/8LHE. The room decided to change to a vanilla 1/3 structure a while back, and has stuck with it ever since. It seems that by going this direction, the room has lost a significant "niche" that it once held. Also, the decision to offer strictly a BBJ in lieu of HHJ is equally questionable. Considering the BBJ competion in the off Strip market is extraordinarily fierce (taking into account Stations 150K Jumbo and the Orleans 100K room share), the 16K that Rio offers is simply overmatched.

Furthermore, the room is fitted with modern technology, BUT DOESN’T USE IT! This is rather interesting to see. Though the room is fitted with the Genesis Bravo electronic waitlist system and has tableside units installed the units are not functioning. Apparently this is a permits/budgetary issue, and until then, the room instead retains the players’ cards of the players and returns them upon checkout. This is along the lines of something one would expect from a significantly lesser room (i.e. Club Fortune, Joker’s Wild, or even Tuscany), but not the home of the WSOP. This ‘retain the card and not use the tableside units’ modus operendi is simply comical disallows any real chance of this room being taken seriously.

For goodness sakes, management, this property houses your most prized franchise, and you can’t even get 10 tables wired for Bravo? Seriously? It’s not just disappointing, it’s laughable.

Overall, the management of the Rio poker room is a mix of outstanding and questionable. On the room level, the personnel that this reviewer interacted with personified professionalism in all aspects. On the corporate/higher level, the room falls significantly short.

Comps Rating: 5
The Rio poker room is part of the Harrah’s Entertainment Total Rewards program, which immediately elevates the room overall as the Total Rewards program is arguably the best player loyalty system available.

Players earn $1 per hour in comps from 3PM to 3AM, and $3 per hour in comps from 3AM to 3PM. At this time, Rio does not award Tier Credits to poker players, but that may change soon (currently Harrah’s is the only Las Vegas room to award Tier Credits in addition to the $1 per hour).

These comps are added directly to the card and can be used at ANY food outlet or company owned retail outlet nationwide. The comps can also be applied toward your hotel room bill or used in the spa. Because the comps are applied directly to the card, no paper comp from the poker room is required. This is truly a phenomenal players’ card program.

In addition to the earned comps, the Rio offers a Bad Beat jackpot. This reviewer would prefer to see high hand jackpots as opposed to a BBJ, but that is more of a personal preference. Also, as mentioned previously, the room also offers a variety of promotions running weekly. These include 3 freerolls a week, reduced rake from 3AM to 3PM every day, triple comps (aforementioned), and cash drawings.

Overall, the comps at the Rio are arguably amongst the best in the city, possibly second to Harrah’s, which offers direct cash back to players who play a certain amount of hours each day and each month, and Tier Credits for poker. The comps and promotions that the Rio offers are the strongest selling points that this room offers, and might be reason enough to dedicate significant playing time to the Rio, despite the many room quality issues.
