Editor's Review - Orleans Poker Room

Total Rating: 3.90

Room Quality Rating: 4
**Last Updated: 04/29/09**

The Orleans poker room is a well established and popular poker venue, offering the lowest rake of any major room (10%/$3 max plus $1 jackpot on all games). Opening in 1996, the Orleans is inarguably the one of the largest and consistently busy poker rooms in Las Vegas. Owned and operated by Boyd Gaming, the Orleans is popular with locals and tourists alike. This poker room has games for most all players, including around the clock Omaha 8 or Better (a true rarity). The room is quite large, with over 30 tables (several of which are specifically for tournaments), and is ideally situated only steps from the parking garage, quick food options, and the restrooms. For several reasons, it is easily the best overall local’s casino poker room in Vegas, when taking everything into account including rake, action, service, tournaments, game selection, and overall convenience.

Aesthetically speaking, the Orleans poker room is practical, with little in the way of overly artsy lighting sconces or over the top wall adornments. The concentration at the Orleans is on poker, and that is obvious upon entry. The tables have fairly recently been refelted with a soft cloth that tends to show dirt easily, but still add a bright element to the room. The color palates are identical to those seen at Venetian, with light khaki accents coupled with golden betting lines. The chairs are dark brown leather, with ample lumbar support and swivel/adjustable height bases, on wheels. Several televisions align the upper walls, and there is a dedicated management desk and cashier cage. Also tournaments have their own dedicated registration desk. There are two permanent walls and two half walls that seal in the room, and allow for reasonable spacing for all players and all tables. Overall, this is a well designed room, aesthetically, short on frills, but high on comfort.

The layout of the room is practical. The restrooms are only steps away from the west side of the room, and parking is accessible from both the north parking garage and the eastside lot. The management desk and cashier are well positioned in the center back of the room, allowing all cash games to be rather easily monitored by the staff. The half wall allows for significant walk by and railbird traffic, though the room is a decent trek from the Sports Book and gaming pit areas. There is a food court that is located across from the room, as well as a casino and service bar that is only feet from the room allowing for quick cocktail service and ample food selections.

Though this room is well set up, there are certainly some general areas for improvement. The games lists are displayed on a singular screen above the management’s desk that can sometimes be obscured by players requesting comp information, since the screen is wired through the main management computer, thus sharing the same interface. Also the lists are also sometimes hard to read due to the many games that are listed on the screen. Because Orleans is easily one of the busiest poker rooms in Las Vegas, we would like to see the list expanded to multiple screens instead of just one, but that is a minor complaint.

The room is not equipped with the Genesis Gaming Bravo system which means that players must swipe in and out at the management desk. The Orleans poker room uses its own players’ card that is separate from the one used for the slot/pit areas. This is definitely a significant area for improvement for the convenience of its casino patrons. Poker players’ cards are generated for the players in the room, so no extra walking is required to get a card. Nearly all cash game tables are equipped with autoshufflers, though the tournament room is not (in fact, the tournament tables are not even cut for drop boxes, so cash games cannot be spread there even if the cash game demand is higher than that of tournaments).

The cleanliness of the room is often a matter of opinion. Some players find that the room is very well maintained by the staff, while others feel that the room is horribly maintained and that trash is found everywhere. This reviewer has played at the Orleans several times, and find that it is somewhere in the middle. The players that frequent the Orleans are often not the most clean and tidy group of people, thus they tend to dirty the place up a bit more than they should; thus mandating a staff that picks up after its patrons a little more than expected. Fortunately, the staff generally follows suit on this and keeps the room as clean as they can. It is common to see various janitorial people in the room in addition to the floor and brush staff. Because this is an extremely busy room most of the time, the room does get cluttered with trash very quickly, and for the most part, the staff is quick to take care of all messes, though their quickness can often be hindered during the peak time periods.

The overall room quality of the Orleans poker room is quite high, especially when taking into account the foot traffic that the room receives on a daily basis. The $3 max rake (plus $1 jackpot) coupled with the tournaments, solid game selection, convenient parking, and comfortable environment allow the Orleans to literally own the locals casino poker market as far as numbers and traffic, and top nearly all Strip rooms with regards to consistency in game selection and availability.

Competition Rating: 3
Make no mistake, the Orleans poker room is a locals’ based venue, with the vast majority of the daily players being older Vegas locals. This is NOT to say that the level of play is that much higher than any other Strip venue, but the chances of finding drunken chip spewing players is decreased dramatically. The players that frequent the Orleans are often predictable weak tight players (often casually referred to as “nits”) that are easily exploitable with any general poker game theory.

The quality of play at the Orleans obviously varies greatly by game. Because the Orleans is such a busy venue, the game selection is high, allowing players to pick and choose the soft spots significantly more easily than at other smaller properties. The quality of play is particularly low in the 4/8 Omaha 8 game, where you will commonly see 6-8 players seeing a flop on nearly every hand. Pots often eclipse the $150 mark on this game. The level of play is significantly higher in the 8/16 Omaha 8 game, which runs fairly regularly.

The daily games spread at the Orleans are quite expansive, allowing for many different levels of competition. In the NLHE games, the buy in was recently increased from $300 max to $500 max, allowing for some deeper stacks to come into play. $100 bills play on all cash games, and the NLHE games can often play quite deep. Due to the raising of the max buy in on the 1/2 game, the 2/5 game has become more rare. The quality of these games is comparable to the Strip, in all honesty.

The Limit Hold’em games are still quite popular at the Orleans, with several tables of 2/4 and 4/8LHE running daily. An occasional 8/16LHE also runs sporadically, which will have a higher level of play.

Though there will be more daily regulars seen, the room is often chock full of off duty casino employees, and other service industry workers that are looking to blow off some steam and play cards. Often tired and agitated, these players can be depended on to add action to the games and gamble in a lot of hands. During the WSOP, the room becomes a true hangout for nearly all off duty WSOP dealers and players. The room is becomes standing room only, and all games imaginable are spread daily, including a true mixed game on at least 2 tables.

Overall, the competition level of the Orleans poker room is average. It is not a super soft bastion of drunken idiocy (for that, see Imperial Palace), nor is it a serious venue with deep stacked grinders (for that, see Wynn). The Orleans is a melting pot where all locals and many tourists come together for a strong mix of low limit poker games and reasonably structured tournaments.

Dealer Rating: 4
The dealers at the Orleans have come a long way in the past few years. Though the personalities of many are hidden due to the focus of the room on the games and overall busy aspect of the venue, the dealers are generally all very competent and control the games well.

As the Orleans has had a poker room since its opening in 1996, many of the dealers are older and experienced with dealing many games. Mixed games often sprout up at the Orleans during special events, and the dealers all handle the various games quite professionally.

Granted, the talkative and bubbly personalities that many find on the Strip are rare here, but this slightly more serious focus on the game is appreciated by this reviewer, and allows for a fluid game, with little to no major dealer errors due to their focus on the game control.

Of course, this does vary by dealer, as some dealers are not aptly prepared for the often demanding players that the Orleans attracts. This often causes dealers to have to put up with a LOT of slack and criticisms, most of which are handled very professionally by the staff.

Overall, the dealers at the Orleans poker room are above average, and have improved exponentially over the years. Dealing Omaha as well as Hold’em daily, the team is well acclimated to board reading and game control, despite a slight lack in welcoming personalities.

Cocktail Rating: 5
The cocktail service at the Orleans is easily the quickest of all locals’ casinos, and one of the top 3 quickest overall. This is due to the service bar that is located only a few feet from the poker room, and the ample scheduling that often includes two or more servers covering the room at peak hours.

The selection is above average, with most premium drinks available, including energy drinks. Also, the cocktail servers are non-union, thus are significantly more attractive/younger than most Strip properties that must adhere to union contracts for hiring and seniority.

Overall, cocktail service and selection is one of the strongest selling points of this room.

Management Rating: 5
The management at the Orleans poker room is extremely strong, and needs to be considering how insanely busy the room can get. Lists in the Orleans can often exceed 20 names, yet the staff usually has a firm handle on all tables at all times. It is an extremely organized room that demonstrates its long term status as a Vegas poker destination.

The management decision that is most impressive is the rake structure. Raking at 10%/$3 max (plus $1 jackpot), the Orleans poker room deserves to be one of the top 3 busiest rooms in all of Las Vegas, and is. The rake structure that the Orleans offers is the second lowest in all of Las Vegas, and the absolute lowest of rooms in excess of 3 tables. For comparison’s sake, Caesars Palace rakes at 10%/$5 max plus $1 and offers WELL DRINKS ONLY to poker players. Orleans rakes at $2 per hand less, and offers all standard top shelf liquors and blended drinks to its customers; thus Orleans is a significantly busier room than Caesars (and most other rooms in Vegas).

Though the room lacks the Genesis Bravo room management system, the room is still extremely well organized, relying on verbal callouts from the staff and brushes. The management podium is often a hotbed of activity between the staff opening new games and calling down the often bulging lists of waiting players. Managing one of the busiest rooms in Vegas is quite a daunting task, and the staff here does a phenomenal job, considering the high levels of agitated and demanding players.

The room management is often extremely overworked and multitasking by running around the room rendering decisions, filling seats and doing fills. What is striking is that the room management work so very hard nearly all the time, with little to no incentive, as the room has an archaic policy of not allowing floormen/shift managers to accept tokes. This is a policy that we hope to see changed soon due to the near impossibility of retaining quality management staff without proper wages.

Overall, the Orleans poker room management is much underrated. Though they have made some questionable decisions in the past with regard to promotional money distribution, the staff does very well with what they have. We would like to see the room add autoshufflers to ALL tables and install the Genesis Bravo tableside units, but other than that, the Orleans poker room management is a very strong entity that easily earns a 5/5 rating.

Comps Rating: 3
The Orleans has a very antiquated comp program that tends to be the weakest link of the poker room as a whole. The Orleans poker room gives $1.25 an hour for the first 4 hours, then .50 an hour for the remaining hours, up to a $9 per day cap on the Orleans Poker Room Players’ Card. This is better than nothing, but that is not saying much. Offering a flat $1 per hour, uncapped, would put them in with the standard within their industry. It is a questionable policy to decrease comps for a player if they choose to play longer in your venue. It is similar to punishing them for playing a long time in the room, and that simply does not make sense. Furthermore, a paper comp is necessary to redeem your comps. We would like to see the room improve their software so the card need only to be swiped at all venues, much like Stations and Harrah's properties.

Their hourly comps are quite versatile and can be used anywhere in the casino, including the gift shop and the food court across from the poker room.

For many, the Orleans is probably best known for their Bad Beat Jackpot, which is offered for both Hold’em and for Omaha. It is a room share jackpot that grows daily, with the qualifier lowering every day (except for Omaha, which has a fixed qualifier of Quad jacks beaten). When the BBJ is hit, everyone playing in the room gets a piece, with the lion’s share going to the losing player. A recently implemented policy was to prohibit employees from being eligible for the BBJ, due to a controversy whereupon an off duty poker room employee won the jackpot, causing unnecessary griping and eventual rules updates.

When the BBJ swells to the mid 100K range, the room is often insanely busy, with 100+ names on every Hold’em list. It is quite a sight.

Overall, the comps offered by Orleans are not that great, but not that bad either. It is definitely worth it to get a poker comp card when you visit, as the hourly comps do add up rather quickly.
