Though it has moved a few times, it has developed a strong and loyal customer base that appreciate its true longevity. The room itself is rather unassuming, encompassing nothing more than a half wall and two permanent walls alongside the south side of the casino. The action is nothing if not dependable, as the room remains to be a popular poker venue at all hours of the day and night. Aesthetically, the Flamingo poker room is rather plain and modest. There are no stark contrasts with regard to color, and the only real unique aspects with regard to furnishings are the chairs that have the WSOP logo embroidered on the back. These high back chairs are easily susceptible to falling over backwards due to their awkward height in relation to the chair width. General room quality is rather standard. The mirrored back wall is used to showcase the dry erase board high hand jackpots, rules, and other various promotions. The tables are adequately spread out, and 8 of their 11 tables are equipped with autoshufflers. The table felts were recently redone, and the armrests are reasonably comfortable. The room is more of a poker area then an actual room, as there are only two permanent walls, with the room enclosed by a half wall on the north side, and a casino bar on the west side. There is a brush podium at the front of the room (similar to the setup at Ballys) that has the electronic waitlist as well as a sign up screen for the brush to manage the games. A recent welcome addition to the Flamingo poker room is the Genesis Bravo games management system, which tracks open seats, player comps, and electronic list management directly at the table and at the podium. Recently, nearly all Harrahs owned properties installed the Bravo system, which enables all rooms unify the comps, thus allowing players to earn comps at any Harrahs property, and then redeem those comps at any other property of their choosing. Overall, the room quality of the Flamingo poker room is just above average. This room is not a poor quality room, nor is it anywhere near world class. It comfortably sits at the slightly above average level, where it is more than likely to stay for many years to come. Competition Rating: 3 The competition at the Flamingo poker room varies greatly based upon time of day and day of week, and is staffed appropriately to handle the fluctuations in business. Though this is a fairly standard modus operandi of most poker rooms in Las Vegas, the Flamingo has a unique aspect that separates itself from most center Strip small rooms in that it has a very strong locals following. These players are usually older, play nearly every day, and resemble a typical group you would see playing at your average Station or Coast casino. During the dayshift (especially midweek) these players are the majority of players in the room. In the evenings and weekends, more tourists are at the tables, and the competition balances out. This is not to say that the Flamingo locals are good players; far from it. However to the average Joe Six Pack that decides to play cards for the first time, these daily grinders may toughen the game slightly. Usually, these types of players are nothing if not extraordinarily predictable and fairly easy to read, as their betting patterns rarely vary. An average AVP’er with a good working knowledge of the game and essential game theory should be able to dominate the games at the venerable Flamingo poker room. Overall, the competition is softer then the tough rooms (i.e. Wynn, Venetian, Bellagio etc), but tougher then the overtly tourist rooms (i.e. Imperial Palace, Ballys, O’Sheas). Though not necessarily a selling point of the room, the competition level is not a reason to avoid the room either. Dealer Rating: 3 The dealers of the Flamingo poker room are competent, experienced, and generally friendly and welcoming to new players. They are what is expected from a middle market room. Though some dealers have been there for quite a long time, many were hired less than five years ago, post poker boom. Due to the large percentage of locals/regulars that the room attracts, the dealers tend to be talkative/chummy with the locals significantly more than the average walk-in player. This is expected at a Stations property, but might leave a bad taste in the mouth of tourists or casual players. Overall, the dealing staff of the Flamingo is average in all respects. The staff is comprised of a nice group of people that deal the cards efficiently, and run the games well. Cocktail Rating: 3 The cocktail service at the Flamingo poker room is between average and below average as far as quality, service, and server attractiveness. Premium labels are generally not available, including Red Bull, top shelf liquors, and frozen drinks. The staff is very quick, due to the service bar being directly alongside the poker room. Because Flamingo is a union property, the servers are often older and no nonsense with regards to personality. Overall the service staff is quick, which helps to raise their rating above the below mark. Generally though, the personality, drink quality, and attractiveness of the servers would rank at below average. Management Rating: 4 The management of the Flamingo poker room is above average, and exceeds the expectation of this reviewer. The room has the modern technology of the Genesis Bravo system installed in all of items tables, as well as auto shufflers in most of their tables. The list is tracked electronically via the front podium, and comps are tracked at the table through the Bravo system. The management staff is comprised of an experienced group of people, most of which have strong poker backgrounds and are very hands on when it comes to table management. An area of concern when it comes to table management is the inability to contact players that are waiting for a seat (no pagers or text messaging available) and the dry erase board that is used to track the high hands. It would seem that some sort of electronic screen should be used to track the high hands, like what is seen at Ballys or Caesars Palace. Overall, the management of the Flamingo poker room exceeds expectations with regard to technology and staff. The room retains a staff when the room goes dark (i.e. all games break), and is one of the busier Harrahs owned poker rooms in Las Vegas. Comps Rating: 4 The Flamingo poker room gives players $1 per hour comps on their Total Rewards players’ card. These earned comps are input directly on the card and can be used at ANY Harrahs property (no paper comp is required) for food, beverage, or gift shop purchases. The unified Harrahs Total Reward system is the most player friendly award system in Las Vegas for poker, and simply participating in this program guarantees an above average rating when it comes to comps. The universal aspect of the program in conjunction with the uncapped earn rate and convenience factor make the Total Rewards program the best in Vegas for long term longevity for poker players. The room does not offer a hotel room rate for poker players, but earned comps can be applied to the hotel room bill. Also, the room offers high hand jackpots, an Aces cracked promotion, and double high hand bonuses from 4AM to 8AM.
