Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Bally's Poker Room Total Rating: 3.85 Room Quality Rating: 3 **Last Updated: 09/30/09** The Bally’s poker room is one of the most action driven small rooms on the Strip, especially at night. The 10 table room is located in an alcove, directly adjacent to the main casino bar (Sully’s), off the main casino thoroughfare. Because the poker area is only a few feet from the blackjack and dice pit, the noise level can often be quite high, especially during the evening and night time frames. This is rather expected, as the Ballys casino is one of the older properties in Las Vegas, and has a general architectural design that amplifies the casino ambiance significantly. The poker room, though aesthetically mediocre, is practical and convenient in both its location and layout. Simply said, the Ballys poker room is exactly what it should be: a no frills small room that focuses providing a low stakes friendly game for its hotel guests and casino visitors. Aesthetically, the Bally’s poker is plain and unassuming. 10 tables, all with green felt, some with autoshufflers, and all with tableside Genesis Bravo player tracking units so all comps are tracked accurately and reflect on the Total Rewards players card quickly. The room was obviously created out of a need for a room, and added long after the casino layout was predetermined. This leads to a simple room, with little to no additional aesthetical adornments other then WSOP branded signage, and a few widescreen televisions, two of which are dedicated to the waiting list tracking and high hand jackpot payouts, respectively. The chairs are of the standard cloth laden variety, non swivel and non adjustable height. The layout of the room is practical, though a little forced, due to the rather awkward placement of the front list tracking podium, between two of the most used tables. There is a cashier desk in the back corner, which leads this room to have a similar layout structure to that of sister Harrah’s Entertainment property Imperial Palace. Unlike the IP, though, Bally’s utilizes velvet ropes to line the front of the room only with the other side of the room cornered off by a back wall and Sully’s Bar. In addition to the tableside Genesis Bravo player tracking units installed in the tables, the room tracks players through electronic wait lists, and tracks all high hand payouts through a rotating display on a mounted television screen. Cell phones are allowed within reason at the table, and the room is quite busy and bustling most of the time due to the prime location of the room in relation to the rest of the casino. Overall, the room quality of Bally’s poker room effort is very fitting considering the age and character of the hotel & casino itself. Bally’s casino encompasses a mere 67,000 square feet, a true baby by modern Las Vegas casino standards, thus allowing a rarified intimacy in the poker room and entire casino that is often lost in the larger resorts. Bally’s as a property has existed since 1973, opening as the MGM Grand, thus bringing character and comfort that can only be found in a small poker room setting. The room quality here is admittedly average, but the comfort level, intimacy, and character is quite high and rates Bally’s as one of this reviewers favorite overall poker rooms in the city. Competition Rating: 5 The competition level of the Bally’s poker room is part and parcel to why this reviewer considers it one of his overall favorite rooms for 1/2 NLHE. Despite encompassing only 10 tables, the room packs a strong punch often filling all tables to capacity at night and on the weekends, with tourist heavy games, loose action, and intoxicated passer-by. This is largely due to the prime location that the room offers the casual walk in player, aligning itself along not only a popular casino bar (Sully’s), but the singular table games pit that is fully staffed and in use 24 hours a day. It is common to find players leaving the dice table and head right to the poker room and vice versa. Loose, wild play often commences nightly at Bally’s, and due to the high payout morning promotion, games are starting quite early in the day, often devoid of the older nit crowd. This is largely due to the room requiring that the lowest stakes game they will spread is 3/6LHE, and most of the bonus chasing crowd prefers an early morning game of 2/4 LHE at the sister property Imperial Palace. The Ballys Hotel and Casino is centrally located on one of the busiest intersections in the country (Flamingo and Las Vegas Blvd), and is connected to the neighboring Harrah’s Entertainment property, Paris Las Vegas, via a long indoor hallway (which also leads to a joint property parking garage). Paris closed its poker room several months ago, thus leaving Ballys to single handedly absorb the poker business from both properties, which encompass 5,279 total hotel rooms. Bally’s is generally considered a “value” property, with Paris catering to a slightly higher paying customer. Both of these groups come together in the Bally’s poker room, thus providing tables rich with out of Towner recreational players looking for a fun game of cards. Overall, the competition at the Bally’s poker room is the single strongest selling point of the room. The room offers, arguably, the softest 1/2 NLHE game on the Strip (specifically in the evening and at night). Dealer Rating: 4 The dealers at Bally’s are better than the average poker venue, many having several years experience within the industry and with the company as a whole. Their personalities vary greatly from person to person, but all seem to genuinely appreciate the business and the tokes from the players. Though the majority of the Bally’s dealers have appreciative personalities and friendly, welcoming demeanors, others seem to possess a rather lackadaisical attitude and some even lose track of the game. Though all dealers exude mechanical competence, some could use a lesson or two in game control (specifically when a drunk or obnoxious player escalates to belligerency). There are a couple of dealers in particular that could definately use some re-training when it comes to brushing and keeping attention on the game. A few instances have occurred when dealers are acting as brushes where open seats are not attended to, this allowing them to remain open while extensive lists continue to grow. Also, a few dealers seem quite pre-occupied when in the box, allowing pots to be pushed incorrectly or bets not pulled in when appropriate. Also, there is at least one dealer that violates several proper dealing protocols by doing things such as riffling chips from the pot, picking up bets instead of sliding, and pointing at players for action. These types of things are indicative of dealers that need some re-training. Overall, the Bally's dealing staff is slightly above average. There definately needs to be some re-training with regards to some so the staff and once again claim the top crown for overall dealer quality within the HET umbrella. As of September 2009, the dealing staff at Bally's has improved. There are still a couple dealers that unfortunately bring down the rating from a 5/5 to a 4/5, but this reviewer is happy to see that the staff is much more cohesive than it once was. Cocktail Rating: 4 The speed of the cocktail service at Bally’s, the vast majority of the time, is often the fastest in the entire city. Due to the service bar being only a few feet from the poker room, the women servicing the room are often lightening fast, and often address the entire room singularly from the side of the room shortly after drop offs to make sure no patron was left behind. The servers are union, and thus many are older with long established histories with the company, but their level of service exceeds that of even the largest and most prestigious poker rooms in the city. Unfortunately, the cocktail drink availability prevents the room from being able to achieve a 5/5 rating here. Red Bull, sugar free and regular, is available, but only served in the glass, not in the can (patrons can watch their drink being poured from the can into the glass, however). Most basic premium drinks are available, but most high top shelf is not. Overall, the service alone escalates the cocktail rating to a 4/5, from what would traditionally be a 3/5 for drink availability and quality. For the fastest drink service in the city, one would be hard pressed to name a single property that even comes close to Bally’s Las Vegas. Management Rating: 5 The management of the Bally’s poker room has improved greatly in the past year, but still has room for improvement. Rating management requires that two distinct levels of management be discussed. One is the room management (i.e. the human personnel on the floor) and the other is how the room is managed as a whole. On the room level, the staff is well positioned most of the time, with someone running the front of the room via the list management podium, and the other, a cashier, running the lineup and the cage in the back of the room. The personnel seem to be educated in proper poker protocol and render decisions fairly and without prejudice. The floor staff have improved in the past year (from 2008 to 2009). Overall, the staff on the room level are friendly, competent, and run the room well. On the overall management level, the room has improved greatly with killing off of an archaic cell phone ban, addition of morning promotions, and increasing of the high hand jackpot payouts. However, there are some areas for improvement; such as the lack of autoshufflers in the majority of tables, and the lack of a front person stationed at the podium at all times. These areas of concern will more than likely be corrected over time. As with all Harrah’s Entertainment properties, Bally’s rakes at the 10%/$5 max level, with $1 jackpot. This is the standard within the company, as well as at Planet Hollywood. This is unfortunate, but well above the level of decision making at the property level. Overall, the management of the Bally’s poker room is strong and is getting better as time goes on. More and more special promotions and comps are being introduced to the players, and more archaic rules are being retooled and/or eliminated completely. The management of the Bally’s poker room is definitely a selling point of the room. Comps Rating: 4 Bally’s awards players with 100 Reward Credits ($1) and 28 Tier Credits per hour of play on the Total Rewards HET players’ card. This is standard within the industry. The comps are tracked on the TR card, and can be used at any Harrah’s property worldwide, and do not require the use of a paper comp generated from the poker room. The Total Rewards program is arguably the best overall player loyalty programs in the world, and allows for cross property use for all games and at all restaurants and gift shops. Tier Credits were traditionally only awarded to slot and pit players, and allow the players to earn higher levels of complimentaries and services by earning high levels of players’ card status, such as Platinum, Diamond, and Seven Star. Bally’s also offers high hand jackpots, with progressive royal flushes, and a special morning promotion which awards $100 cash to players for getting their pocket Aces cracked from 9am to noon, Monday through Friday. It is worth mentioning that though the gift shop accepts Total Rewards comps most of the time, there is a time limitation when these comps can be redeemed. The gift shop is only able to redeem comps on the card during general business hours, from 9AM to about 11PM 7 days a week, despite the shop being open 24 hours a day. This has to do with Bally's not operating its own Total Rewards center any more and instead relying on Paris. Cashiers have to call the Paris reward center to redeem comps during said hours. This is unfortunate, but is well beyond the scope of the Bally's poker room management's control. Overall, the comp program at Bally’s is strong, and is getting better with time. The new promotions being offered in the room are quite lucrative, and when taking the extremely soft levels of competition into account, it is easy to strongly recommend the Bally’s poker room to all visitors.
