Poker Room Rate: No Editor's Review - Palms Poker Room Total Rating: 3.85 Room Quality Rating: 4 **Last Updated: 10/30/08** The Palms poker room is one of the more unique room setups in Las Vegas. Encompassing two separate rooms separated by a hallway leading to the restrooms, the Palms poker room was originally designed to house Low Limit games in one room, and high limit games in the other. Over time, the decision was made to separate the rooms based on Limit and No Limit, with the Limit room occupying the former low limit area, and the No Limit room occupying the former High Limit area. The poker rooms at the Palms offer the closest restrooms possible to poker players, as the two rooms are separated only by a hallway that leads to the restrooms themselves. The Palms poker rooms are also quite friendly when it comes to players who smoke, as the tables are only steps away from a main thoroughfare where smoking is permitted (the Palms poker rooms themselves are both non smoking, though the Limit rooms does allow smoking on graveyard starting at 2:30AM, and lasting until 9AM). With regards to aesthetics, the Palms poker rooms are quite basic, and standard. The tables offer cup holders, a racetrack for chip storage (something that players either love or hate), and side tables are available for food and miscellaneous storage of goods. The walls are covered with various posters advertising their freeroll, poker seminars, and other information, and the back walls have electronic scrolling boards that mention the high hand payouts. Each room has a management podium that also acts as the poker cashier. During busy times, both rooms are staffed with separate brushes/shift managers. The room’s manager office is located in the NL room, and the manager can often be seen walking the room and talking with patrons. The chairs at the Palms are below standard, and are basically bingo hall chairs with wheels. Seat cushions are available to ease the comfort, and all tables offer auto shufflers. Overall, the room quality of the Palms is sufficient, and the location of the restrooms is supreme. Though a little lacking from what one might expect from a trendy Hollywood glitz and glam resort, the poker rooms at the Palms are good quality and offer good games 24/7. Competition Rating: 3 The Palms poker room has a definite locals base that has been playing at the Palms for several years. In the popular 2/5NLHE game, that offers a buy in ranging from $200 to $1000, often has local pros grinding it out, some of which are bracelet winners. Joe Awada, a WSOP bracelet winner for 7 Card Stud, plays the 2/5 game nearly every single day, and even hosts free poker seminars in the poker room on occasion. On more than one occasion, this reviewer has seen Layne Flack, Brandon Cantu, and Joe Awada in the room and playing 2/5, with Awada being a daily grinder. Aside from the popular 2/5 game, the Palms poker room offers 1/3NLHE which is often spread on 2 or 3 tables. This game offers a solid mix of daily regulars and walk in tourists that are staying at the hotel or visiting the Palms for the club/dining scene. Overall, the competition at the Palms is a very strong mixed bag. Usually, about half the table is loose and soft, and the other half are tight serious grinders. Serious money can be made in all games offered at the Palms, and in general, the competition at the Palms is truly a selling point of the room. Dealer Rating: 3 The Palms poker room dealing staff has been dealing at the Palms for quite some years. The poker room opened when the resort did in 2001, and has kept its original staff, for the most part. The dealers are generally older, with good game control, and obvious experience with dealing and hand reading. The side pots are maintained well, as are the need for fills, and general player control. The dealing staff, though not the most social, friendly, or approachable, are all competent, mechanically sound, and maintain good game control, which is extremely important due to the often obnoxious and rather debaucherous crowd that tends to be drawn to the Palms during the late night shift. Cocktail Rating: 5 The Palms poker room cocktail waitresses are all quick and efficient, and offer most top shelf and premium drinks to poker players. Red Bull is served in the can, and Smart Water is available upon request. The cocktail servers at the Palms are all generally young, attractive, and wearing very provocative uniforms. The cocktail service is truly a highlight of the Palms poker room, and rivals the Venetian, Wynn, and South Point (the three this reviewer considers to be the best cocktail service in Las Vegas). Management Rating: 4 The Palms poker room management is rather old fashioned in that the room list is maintained via paper and pen, and they do not offer electronic pagers, but they do offer an experienced management staff that are very quick and competent when it comes to rendering correct and fair decisions concerning the game at hand. Joe, the Swing Shift Supervisor in the NL room, is one of the most player friendly and honest people in the business. A long standing poker veteran, Joe joined the Palms fairly recently coming from Texas Station, and runs a very good and tight ship on his shift. Joe single handedly adds significant credibility to the room. The games and their lists are maintained efficiently, and seats are filled quickly. The room does not offer the Genesis Bravo system which tracks open seats and player comps on the table, but due to the close proximity of the manager’s podium to the games, this is really a non issue. Overall, the current management of the Palms poker room is well done, and a vast improvement over the previous years. Comps Rating: 4 The Palms offers $1 per hour comps on the Palms Players card, which is tracked by clocking in and out at the manager’s podium upon arrival and departure. These comps are uncapped, and can be used at any Palms food or beverage outlet as well as in the gift shop. The Palms offers high hand jackpots, all of which are capped at $599, as well as a weekly freeroll that requires 15 hours of play. The freeroll has a 6K prize pool.
