Treasure Island (TI) Player Room Review

Treasure Island
07/13/08, Player: Railbird

Total Rating: 3.70

Room Quality Rating: 4
Room Quality Description: TI's poker room is a nice, small room with a generally good, friendly vibe to it. Tables are in good condition and chairs are comfortable enough. Excellent probably has to be reserved for the few top end houses in town, so I will leave it at Good.

Competition Rating: 2
Competition Description: Competition in their $2/4 Limit is very average for that level. Competition in their daily tournaments is very average for a $65 touney. The Head Hunter tournament that I played in attracted a notably stronger field than the daily tournaments. The concern that I have for this room, as a tourist who plays a limited amount of b&m poker, is that the gap in competition between their 2/4 limit game and their $500 buy-in No Limit games is too great for typical tourist / poker enthusiasts. The competition in their $1/3 NL is average only when you have mainly tourists in the game, but most of the time the competition is somewhat tough. Some pretty good local poker players are attracted to this game because the higher buy-ins put more money in play. I don’t think that most tourists on a limited bankroll are looking to play most of the guys in this game most of the time and that in my opinion leaves a cash game void in the room for players like me who come to LV once a year. I’ve read comments on here that this game plays more like a $2/5 NL game and having never played 2/5 I’ll just say there’s a pretty big gap between the two games that are spread daily. With that said I understand that this may be their niche and it may work and define their room uniquely so maybe it’s a good thing for them…. For me though I probably need to find a smaller NL game with a $300 buy-in.

Dealer Rating: 4
Dealer Description: The dealers are really a strength of this room. I see that several of their better dealers have moved on, but several new dealers also seem to infuse the same friendly vibe into the room.

Cocktail Rating: 5
Cocktail Description: My comments relate specifically to service and most of the time that I was in the room the waitress came around more often than people actually wanted drinks. They were their often and they were professional and courteous.

Management Rating: 3
Management Description: I hate to say it, but my experience with the TI management was not as good this trip. Overall management is still a strength, but I don’t think as strong as it was. The mission of this room has been clearly stated on this website and to me Danette and Michelle ( I think Michelle is her name, lady working with Danette) by far exceed all other members of the management staff that I encountered in conducting themselves in this regard. At times several dealers stepped in and ran the desk early in the day and although I don’t have names, they also operated the room in a friendly, inviting manner. My problem is with the younger male manager. I didn’t get his name, but to me this guy stands out glaringly in contrast to TI’s mission to be a friendlier, more welcoming type of poker room and he stood out in contrast to the rest of the staff. I encountered him on two days and got the same impression each time. On Monday (7/7/08) I had just arrived in LV that day and decided to start things off slow with some 2/4 limit. I was placed 4th on the list sometime around 7 or 8 PM. Two were soon seated and I was 2nd behind the name Maria. There did not seem to be any Maria in view and I thought good maybe Maria is gone and I’ll be seated next. Nope. Seat opens and is filled, Maria remains at the top of the list. WTF is my first thought. So I keep waiting about 40-50 minutes later a seat opens. Take a guess. Yeah, seat is given to a kid that had just walked in the room 5 minutes prior. I’ll be damn I think to myself. First night in Vegas, I came all the way over here to TI and I can’t get a seat. So I wait some more. Sometime thereafter Maria is removed from the list and maybe that kid last seated was Maria, but I don’t think he was. But hey I am at the top of the list. Anytime now, a-n-y t-i-m-e it has only been an hour and a half. I say to myself if he seats one more person in front of me then I'll have to move on. So a seat comes open, nobody in the room waiting, nobody on the list… hot damn, finally….. the manager walks over to the empty seat and put a large green post-it note with someone’s name on it. I walked over to see what the note said, Jeff or something like that was scribbled on the note. I couldn’t believe it and I left. I actually did interact with this guy several times over the several days. Never smiled, never said thank you, kiss my foot or anything unless tipped. The whole thing and in my opinion the way this one particular employee operates just flies in the face of the room itself. The guy was just not welcoming, friendly or really polite at all. If I had to put up with that crap across the board I would not be back, but let me stress that ALL other TI managers and staff members are about as good as it gets and TI is still high on my list. If it were not for this one guy I would give the management a 5 and if I would just have gotten a seat according to the list or even close to the list then my only real criticism is this guys needs to be a bit more inviting and appreciative. As a tourist that is what I am looking for and that is what I expect.

Comps Rating: 4
Comps Description: $2 an hour. Very good.
