Luxor Player Room Review
Everyone here really needs to try harder
12/18/07, Player: Stranded in Indiana
Total Rating: 2.25
Room Quality Rating: 2
Room Quality Description: Not much imagination has gone into this room. They've sort of roped off an area behind the sports book (which itself is one of the worst on the strip). When I go to a Vegas casino, I expect a poker room at least equal to what I can find in Northwest Indiana, and the Luxor doesn't even try to meet that standard. Compared to the effort that resorts of similar stature put into their poker room, the one at Luxor feels like an afterthought. It's also not easy to find for those who don't know it's located next to the sports book. I will give them credit for close proximity to restrooms.
Competition Rating: 3
Competition Description: I played late on a Monday night/Tuesday morning and found a mix of bad players, steady players, and a couple of loud-mouth arrogant aggressive types. Playing the noon tourney the next day, I encountered several players who didn't understand basic betting concepts, etc.
Dealer Rating: 2
Dealer Description: The first night we had a couple of older guys who didn't seem to want to be there. The tourney dealers the next day were better, though one female dealer was, I thought, prematurely harsh about players needing to protect their hands, etc. Since it's a $33 buy-in noon tournament, there are probably people there playing their first live tournament. The dealers should be helpful toward those players, not rude. That same woman was also the last dealer to show up at the tourney, so everyone was waiting for our table to start.
Cocktail Rating: 3
Cocktail Description: I didn't order any, but I also don't remember them coming around too often.
Management Rating: 2
Management Description: It was fairly dead when I got there, so no need to wait. They have a dry erase board or something up front that they write things on, which again just adds to the cheap feel of the place. During the tourney, the floor announced two blind raises within about three minutes of each other. It seemed like they switched off on who was overseeing the tourney in the middle of it, and maybe they didn't communicate well as to what was going on.
At many of the other rooms I visited, the management seemed happy to be staffing the poker room and created an inviting atmosphere. I found the opposite to be true at Luxor.
Comps Rating: 2
Comps Description: When I bought in for the $2/4 limit game, the floor guy pretty much laughed at me and said he didn't need my Players Card. Without much else going for them in terms of drawing power, you'd think they'd be more open with their comps. They do have a high hand that changes every hour, with the winner receiving $150 (I think). The standards are low enough that it usually gets hit every hour.
