Complete Updated Review of Luxor Poker Room.

Room: Luxor
Summary: Recently expanded to 14 tables, the poker room at Luxor is about the same as I remember it. Highlights include softer competition, and 24 hour sit-n-go poker tournaments.
Content: This weekend I had an opportunity to revisit the poker room at Luxor Las Vegas for a follow-up review. It had been almost one year since I last visited Luxor, so it was definitely time for a follow-up.
After you read the highlights from this article, you can read the complete review with updated pictures at the Luxor: editor review page.
What’s New:
Expansion to 14 Tables - As reported, the poker room at Luxor recently expanded by three poker tables to 14 tables. This is a sign that the poker business is good at Luxor. Two years ago the poker room at Luxor only had seven tables. The fact that the Luxor poker room doubled in size in two years is a testament to the popularity of poker in Sin City (not that you needed any additional evidence of this).
Management Desk Moved - Space was made for the three new poker tables by moving the management counter from the interior wall of the poker room to the front of the poker room. Good decision. This is a much more convenient location. The list is managed more efficiently when the desk is at the front, and waiting players will not bunch up inside the poker room. Placing the desk at the front of the poker room also draws in more players who are thinking of trying poker for the first time. It conveys a more inviting ambiance.
Competition Worse - Competition is worse than I remember it. Players are also much more hostile than I remember. On my recent visit there were several young players with way more attitude than expected at a $2/4 low limit table. The players were cursing, throwing cards, and acting generally unruly. On the upside, they sucked at poker, and dumped money. In addition to the jerks, there was a steady stream of totally clueless players sitting down in my game.
Yes, there were a couple of decent players at my table, but the poker room at Luxor is an ultra-low limit poker room. On my most recent visit only $2/4 and $1/2 No Limit Hold’em were going. Real sharks hunt bigger fish elsewhere.
Sit-n-Go Tournaments - Luxor now offers 24 hour single table sit-n-go poker tournaments. Buy-in is $62+3, and the top-two players are paid. These are quite popular and tend to start about every 90 minutes or so.
No Quarters - Quarters are no longer used in the poker room. The minimum denomination is $1. This is good because fractional rakes are not taken now. For example, if there is $37 in the pot, only a $3 rake is taken. This change also speeds up the dealers and the fills.
What’s Old:
The poker room at Luxor is still in the same location, near the walkway to Excalibur.
There is still no computer list management, and there are still only four old school televisions inside the poker room.
Dealers are competent; only two noteworthy mistakes in a three hour session.
Cocktail waitresses average in both looks and speed.
Management remains solid, but not extraordinary.
Comps are still among the best in Las Vegas, especially for locals (and players who will be around long enough to take advantage of the freerolls).
My Sprint PCS cell phone still does not work in the poker room (or anywhere nearby).
Overall, the poker room at Luxor is about the same as last year. The one area where I believe Luxor has improved is in the competition category. As stated, competition is softer than I remember it, and as such I have adjusted this rating accordingly (from 3 to 4). Luxor is a solid poker room, especially for local low limit players.
